I think he looks Italian or Ukranian/Russian Jewish. The nasolabial creases, think Leonard Cohen or Leonard Nimoy. And if they have a surname (Nicholas) then they have relatives as well. I think it is only a matter of time before the forensic genealogists solve this one. Nicholas could be Russian or an anglicized Italian name. And IMHO he wasn’t running from anything but the demons that dwelt in his mind. There seems to have been an ample amount of paranoia there. Like FLEK.

This might be old news but i had never heard it. If you look him up on FindAGrave his gravestone says birth was 1935 but the rest of his information says 1937

I wonder if there are any updates on this case as of late? Seems a bit quiet on this front.

I thought they had already narrowed him down to Nichols or Nicholas?

:Bumping - Joseph Chandler

Have not heard very much on the Joseph Chandler case, it is not listed on DDP's website under cases. Not seeing a lot of mentions on their FB page either.

Surprised that it's him who got ID'd. I thought it was Sheep Flats Jane Doe.

I wonder if we will actually find out his name? Since he committed suicide like Lyle, should we prepare ourselves that JNC3's family may choose not to release his real name? Unless he was a criminal/fugitive, and then I don't think there is a choice in that IMO. LE will want to declare a criminal case closed if there is one. They have been really close to ID'ing him for a long time so this should be interesting. I'm surprised there have been no leaks of the name yet.

So impressed with DNA Doe Project for identifying him!!!! They will be attending the press conference tomorrow which will be held at 1PM. I really hope they give DDP proper credit for solving his identity

"After years of investigation, Chandler’s real true identity will be revealed in a press conference at the United States Court House in Cleveland."

I imagine we will find out his name given that this is what the articles are saying :)

I personally think that he was a criminal and that his story will be crazy.

You got me thinking Gardener. I don't think next of kin can necessarily prevent that info from coming out if JNC is guilty of an offense. He's not a minor and it would normally be a matter of public record if was tried. Maybe if his family has pull??

I agree, the family would not have a choice if he has a criminal record. In suicide cases, in general, I don't think there is any requirement for LE to honor the family's wishes. It's just that usually it is the reverse situation that we know someone by name has died and then the police either release the cause of death or they simply say "no foul play suspected" and let the family choose if they want to say any more. It seems to be up to the individual department on how sensitive they want to be to the family. After thinking about it, I think we will find out JNC3's real name because he stole an identity and used a fake SSN (unlike Lyle who just chose an alias from a novel). Just the fact that we didn't find out Lyle's name gave me pause when thinking about this case.

Theory time: because of the coincidence between the DNA test that Contra Costa County officials did to find out who the Zodiac is and this announcement, what if JNC IS the Zodiac Killer??? It’s far fetched, but hey, crazier things have happened!

Whatever the outcome, I hope any surviving family members aren't harassed by the public. I was horrified to read that happened to the family of Buckskin Girl Jane Doe. What is wrong with some people? Why would anyone threaten innocent strangers that way? Hope it doesn't happen if Chandler has relatives, but I fear it will.

I'm really surprised (but happy!) that he was identified. Great job, DDP!
