Identified! OH - Eaton, Wht 30-50, UP55702, fingers hooked in small tree, May '68 - Albert Allen Frost

I'm honestly stunned that not only Preble County Penny wasn't Mary Croft VanGilder, but that the decedent was actually a man. Wow I wonder how the original investigators made that mistake.

Rest in peace Albert. And thank you for your service.

Happens occasionally. The morphological sex analysis is based on statistics for different mesurements of the bones. He had a very slight build and a very "feminine" skull shape. Ive seen many cases of skeletons with ambigous sex markers and also those who matched the opposite. Ive had a case of a young individual from a burial context whose markerd pointed to mostly male. However, it was a young female with fully "female" gravegoods. Also a Merovingian burial of multiple individuals, one of them with female markers. DNA revealed a male individual, also supported by "masculine" grave goods.

So, on occasion, it happens.

In the case of Albert, i do see a small hint. It looks like they checked the pelvis and found it to be narrow, hence the notion "may have had trouble giving birth". Well, they were spot on... It was just a male pelvis.

There is no sign of trauma to the remains to indicate obvious signs of foul play, according Turner. But the entire body was not recovered, and the remains were skeletal.

Preble County Coroner’s Investigator David Lindloff said cause of death was listed as unknown in 1968. They are in the process of preparing an amended death certificate.

“It is going to be extremely difficult to come up with something when you don’t even know what the cause of death,” Lindloff said. “But you never know what this is going to kick up when word gets out and we know who it is.”

He said there are some Preble County families with the last name of Frost with ties to Hamilton.

“To anyone listening and reading, if you are older and remember Albert, reach out to me or the Preble County Coroner’s Office,” Turner said.
