Two adults are dead, a young child is hospitalized, and another child is still missing after a train hit multiple pedestrians on a bridge Sunday evening in Fremont, according to Mayor Danny Sanchez.

The people who died are believed to be a mother and daughter, ages 58 and 38, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, the mayor said.

When asked for details about the incident at a press conference held Monday morning, Sanchez said efforts were focused on recovering the body of the missing five-year-old in the Sandusky River. He added that details concerning what the family was doing on the bridge at the time was still being investigated.

Another young child, around 14 months old, was taken to a hospital in Toledo.

The family was visiting the area on a fishing trip.

Sanchez said authorities believe the train took every safety measure it could have.

"In my opinion, it is not common for pedestrians to be there," he said. "There are clearly marked 'No Trespassing' signs there."

Sanchez said authorities worked overnight in the search and are continuing to conduct "recovery efforts" for the 5-year-old child.

The adult victims were identified as mother and daughter, and the two children were said to be the children of one of the adults.

The family from Fort Wayne, Indiana, had been on a fishing trip along the Sandusky River, and they were on the bridge Sunday night when the train came onto the span, Sanchez said. A 1-year-old girl was rescued and being treated at a hospital, he said.

It's not clear whether the train hit all four or whether some may have jumped or were thrown into the river to avoid the locomotive, Sanchez said.

FREMONT, Ohio — All four people involved in Sunday's fatal train strike in Fremont are now accounted for, with the recovery of the body of a 5-year-old girl from the waters of the Sandusky River on Monday.

A Norfolk Southern train struck the group of pedestrians on a train bridge, killing two adults and injuring a 14-month-old toddler, and resulting in the 5-year-old ending up in the river below.

On Monday afternoon, Kenneth Frost, Fremont safety service director, released the names of the three people who died as a result of Sunday's train strike:
  • Intisar Mi, 5, of Fort Wayne, Indiana
  • O Ny Zar, 34, of Fort Wayne, Indiana
  • Ram Masan, 50, of Fort Wayne, Indiana
Frost also identified the 14-month-old girl as Arti Kar. She is said to be in critical condition at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center, where she was flown by air ambulance on Sunday.

"I've just received a call shortly prior to getting all of you back over here today, that the 5-year-old missing child has been recovered, in the Sandusky River. The body has already been removed from the water as we speak, and that recovery effort took place right behind us as we were all standing here," Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez said. "We believe that all four people involved in this unfortunate, tragic situation, has all been accounted for."

My opinion only: I have to wonder if this was a murder-suicide/attempted family annihilation. Looking at the bridge, I can't imagine any other reason someone would walk across it, especially with their children.
I tend to agree, very strange to be walking across a bridge like that at night with young children, especially since it is clearly marked with signs. Then again, people do irresponsible things all the time, terrible whatever the case.

I agree. There's nothing about the bridge that's scenic, or that would make anyone think it's anything but a functional rail bridge. It's not a place you'd fish from, either.

I just wish adults would leave kids out of this. If you want to die, that's a you thing. A five year old and a baby can't consent and have their whole lives ahead of them, that nobody has a right to deprive them of, however desperate they feel about their individual circumstances.

Now that five year old is dead, and the baby has nobody.

MOO

My only hope is that the baby is so young they will not remember this trauma. I agree with others regards to murder/suicide. Why involve children in that ?

I'm not familiar with this area at all, but the family was from Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is two-ish hours away from Fremont OH where the accident occured. What were they doing there? Maybe they were unfamiliar with the area and weren't aware the bridge was actively being used by trains?

Surely they can tell from the condition of the bodies, if they were hit by the train or not…

The news articles say they were in the area for a fishing trip, but I haven't seen any explanation for why they were on the railroad bridge. If you look at pictures of the bridge, it's very obvious that it's an active railroad bridge and not for pedestrians to walk across. There's another bridge right next to it that has a sidewalk for pedestrians to cross the river safely, and I can't imagine any way that a competent adult could look at them and get them confused or not recognize how dangerous the railroad bridge was in comparison to the other. My opinion only.
