An autopsy found Eva Bretz, 6, had fentanyl in her blood and injury from sexual assault. Her mother, Ashley Fagan, is charged with murder

The girl's mother, Ashley Fagan, 32, is charged with murder, permitting child abuse, involuntary manslaughter, obstructing justice and endangering children. Some of the charges involve injuries to another child, a then-1-year-old baby who was hurt but survived.

oh my gosh. Nothing prepares you to read this kind of stuff. No matter how many cases and years go by. The punch in the gut is always just as visceral. This poor sweet child.

Franklin County Children Services had been involved with Eva and her family since her birth in March 2019 due to a positive drug test. A second report in December 2020 raised concerns about neglect, emotional maltreatment, and physical abuse.

According to the agency, both cases were closed after it was determined that Eva was safe following meetings with caseworkers. Agency leaders said caseworkers responded in the past to concerns about abuse and neglect related to Eva's siblings. There was also an open case involving a sibling at the time of her death.

of course she was on CPS radar, I never doubted it. So sick of these preventable cases not being prevented.

Darcy Bretz, Eva's biological dad's mother, shared her emotional memories of the young girl.

Darcy got the worst phone call a grandparent could get almost a month ago.

"I knew it wasn't good, that was the only weekend in a long time that she wasn't with me," she said.
