Amber Alert issued for missing 4-year-old

Columbus police were searching for a reported stolen car Monday morning that had a 4-year-old girl in the back seat.

The car was recovered around 8:30 a.m., but missing Janylia Fails was not found.

Around 9:30 a.m., Columbus Police detained a man in connection to the kidnapping and car theft. The man has yet to be identified by police.

Timeline of what we know so far

7:30 a.m.

According to police, Janylia's mother called 911 to report her gray '04 Chevy Impala was stolen in the area of N. 4th St and Chittenden Ave. Police said the car had an Ohio plate with license number GWF 9395. The mother said Janylia was asleep in the back seat of the car. She was loading her children into the car around when the car was stolen.

8:30 a.m.

The car was recovered around 8:30 a.m., but missing Janylia Fails was not found.


9:30 a.m.

Around 9:30 a.m., Columbus Police detained a man in connection to the kidnapping and car theft. The man has yet to be identified by police.

Janylia Fails was found safe at 3052 Cassady Village Trail. It’s unknown how Janylia got to that location after she was in the stolen car.

Things like this really, really tick me off! Abuse of the Amber Alert system is a mighty low thing to do!

Pickett told investigators she told police her child was in the vehicle so it would be found faster.

The mother who said her child was taken when someone stole her vehicle has been charged with falsification.
