An Akron teen avoided trial by pleading guilty Friday to two counts of aggravated murder and other crimes in connection with the 2013 slayings of a prominent New Franklin couple. Jamall L. Vaughn, 15, was scheduled to go to trial Monday morning in Summit County Commom Pleas Court before Judge Tom Parker...

Vaughn also pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. On the most serious charges, Parker said Vaughn faces life in prison without any chance of parole, or life with the possibility of parole after serving 20, 25 or 30 years.

A sentencing date is pending.

A 16-year-old boy could spend up to life in prison for helping his cousin bludgeon a New Franklin couple to death with a sledgehammer after breaking into their home.

Jamall Vaughn, who was 14 at the time of the killings, will have his first opportunity for parole in 25 years...

Vaughn apologized to the Schobert family members during the hearing. He said that he was afraid of his cousin, Shawn Ford, 20, who was sentenced to death Monday for bashing the couple with a sledgehammer.

The teens walked 8 miles from Akron to reach the Schoberts’ home in New Franklin. At the time of the assault, Ford's girlfriend Chelsea Schobert, was in critical condition with injuries from a knife attack by Ford days earlier. Prosecutors said Ford killed the Schoberts because the couple planned to end his relationship with their daughter.

Ford apologized and cried during his sentencing, saying, “I messed up. I made a mistake.”
