GUILTY OH - Johnny Clarke, 21, & Lisa Straub, 20, murdered, Springfield Twp, 31 Jan 2011

I'm SO happy to hear they've made an arrest in this case! I was surprised it went unsolved for so long!!

In the video linked above, with Johnny's mom talking, and his dad is there.... um... why isn't he wearing a shirt? Am I missing something?

I wondered that too!

During the video arraignment Monday in Sylvania Municipal Court, Mr. Williams, a first-year social-work student at Owens Community College whose last known address was 1626 Kelsey Ave. in East Toledo, stared straight ahead in silence.

Really? Sigh.

I'm interested in what the "more arrests" are and when they will happen.

Wow, I missed the news, I am glad there has been an arrest in this case. I hope it brings forth some sort of closure for the victims' families. I feel so sorry for them.

Another arrest was made today - a known drug dealer named Cameo Pettaway.

Since 2010, Pettaway has been charged with domestic violence or assault eight times. He was found guilty of one charge in 2010, five of the charges have been dropped and two are still pending. Pettaway also has been found guilty of drug abuse and was arrested for drug trafficking.

BTW - he has a public Facebook page, and has posted some real gems talking about how he has "stacks of cash" and is "always hiring."

Apparently Facebook is a new recruiting outlet for drug dealers?

So glad to hear this. I really wanted to know when the more arrests that were alluded to were going to happen! Thanks for posting.

Pre-trial date for Pettaway is Dec 6th, and Williams trial in January.

Pettaway's arraignment was via video. Is that weird?

Not really I don't think. I think it just streamlines the process? Just my guess.

So, how were these guys connected to Lisa and Johnny? Did they have mutual friends and hear by word-of-mouth that there was something in the house worth stealing, or what was it that made them go there? It wasn't random, was it?

Trial date for Pettaway is now May 30 2012. I don't think it's been established that the killers knew the victims yet.

Well, that's terrifying. It's awful either way, of course, but if they really just walked up to a random house that's one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard, like the Pettit case. Wasn't there some talk about word getting around about a safe in the house?

The prosecutor has moved to delay the trial date.

Also, Johnny's mom, Maytee Clark, has been banned from attending the trial by a judge's order.

http://www.toledoblade.com/Courts/2012/05/05/Murder-trial-delay-is-sought.html

In a six-page motion, the prosecutor's office requested a new trial date "because defendant had not provided any discovery to the state."

Acknowledging that defense information is required only 21 days before trial, the motion stated that a continuance was still necessary "in order to permit the state adequate time to analyze the reports and if necessary to locate and retain experts."

The continuance request prompted an immediate written response from the defense, which noted that for a May 29 trial date, information was not due to the state until May 8.

from same article:

In an order signed April 24, Judge Bates wrote that an April 20 incident in which Ms. Clark was reported to be "vulgar and uncivilized" led to his decision to ban her from proceedings in his courtroom.
"It appears that Maytee Clark cannot conduct herself with any self control and could cause problems during the course of this trial," the judge wrote. "All family members were previously warned concerning this conduct while in the courthouse."

This case is what brought me into poster status as WS. I'd lurked on and off for years. I wouldn't call it my "pet" case, but I was very invested in justice for Lisa and Johnny. Still am, and it's hard to reconcile how slow moving the train is on this. Why so many delays? I'm doing some googling and see no updates other than what's already been posted about here.

Maytee Clark. I hope that woman gets help. This has really taken over every piece of her life and personality. Just proves the dead aren't the only victims.

Judge Bates to rule Tuesday on murder suspect's mental state

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge James Bates said he will decide Tuesday whether an East Toledo man charged in the asphyxiation deaths of a Springfield Township couple is mentally disabled.

His finding will determine whether or not Cameo Pettaway, 23, of 133 Essex St., could be sentenced to death if found guilty of the murders of Lisa Straub, 20, and her boyfriend, Johnny Clarke, 21.

Judge Bates heard testimony Monday from John Matthew Fabian, a forensic psychologist who found through testing, interviews, and examination of school and medical records that Mr. Pettaway is mildly mentally retarded. Charlene Cassel, a clinical psychologist with the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center also testified, saying the tests she conducted and an interview with Mr. Pettaway led her to determine he is not mentally retarded.

Judge rules against death for defendant in slayings

Only one of two men charged in the asphyxiation deaths of a Springfield Township woman and her boyfriend will face the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge James Bates ruled Tuesday that Cameo Pettaway, 23, of 133 Essex St. meets the legal definition of mentally retarded, so he can't be sentenced to death if convicted in the murders of Lisa Straub, 20, and Johnny Clarke, 21. The two were found Jan. 31, 2011, bound by duct tape and with plastic bags over their heads, in the home of Ms. Straub's parents on Longacre Lane.
