3News speaks with family of USPS mail carrier killed while on the job

A few hours after the shooting, Warren police say they located the suspect's vehicle in a driveway at 429 Maryland Avenue Northeast. A search warrant for the residence and vehicle was obtained and the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team was called to assist with serving the warrant.

"Evidence, including the suspect vehicle, was recovered and several individuals were transported to the Warren Police Department to be interviewed," Warren police said in a release on Facebook.

Family friend of the Davis family Tracay Kindler spoke to 3News' Lydia Esparra on Sunday. She said his family and those who knew him are devastated, "He was kind and happy a family man. He wasn't on the streets doing anything illegal, he was trying to provide for his family."

3News also spoke to the man who was first to arrive on the scene after Davis was shot. He said he heard the gunshots that fatally wounded Davis.

"We heard 6 shots than we heard a car speed up and hear west on Washington. She (his wife) came out and saw the mail truck coming down the street and she said oh my God he's driving weird. We were the first people to arrive their and he was in bad shape ."
He and his wife ran up to the vehicle and saw Davis injured but still alive.

"The postal truck was still running and I was worried someone was going to get hurt so I took the key out. I kind of held his hand i said 'it's alright buddy the ambulance is on it's way. It's going to be okay but if its your time it's your time.'"

How very sad for this man and his poor family. Gosh, that's a generous reward. I hope it entices someone to come forward with information very soon.

Oh no, he has 10 children.
Tracey Kindler, a longtime family friend, said Davis had 10 children and always had a smile on his face.

“You could hear stories — people were telling how he’d brighten their day when he comes up to them, just giving them a smile. They could be having a bad day. He would fix their day just by giving them a smile,” Kindler said.

A vigil honoring Davis’ life is planned for this Thursday at 6 p.m. It will start outside the Warren Post Office. Attendees are encouraged to wear Davis’s favorite colors of green, black and white.

Does anyone know if the killing of a mail carrier during the course of their work comes with any additional charges?

I know many municipalities have laws about assaulting public transit operators and the like, and it would make sense with the existence of the Inspection Service and the particularly large reward.

Mourners first gathered at the Warren Post Office on High Street, wearing Davis’ favorite colors of green, black and white. Passing around candles, the family led the crowd on a walk through the streets leading to where Davis took his last breath.

“He’s got 10 kids. What are his kids supposed to do?” Mason said at the vigil. “I don’t know why. We’re angry. We’re hurting. They don’t know who they took.
