The shooting death of a Milwaukee postal worker is alarming. My thoughts are with the victim's family and colleagues.

The postal worker in this homicide was a public servant, which makes this crime even more disturbing.
Criminals responsible for death and harm in our city must be held accountable. To accomplish that, anyone with information about this crime, or other serious crime in Milwaukee, should step forward. That can be done anonymously by calling the police or calling Crime Stoppers at 414 224 TIPS.

Prayers are with our Brothers and Sisters in Branch 2, and with all the loved ones impacted by this senseless act:
A 44 year old letter carrier with 18 years of service was shot and killed yesterday while on the job in Milwaukee. Please send love and prayers to that carrier’s family, the NALC Branch 2 family as well as the entire postal community during this horrible time of grief.

I feel sick. We've had a 20+ years friendship with our neighborhood postal worker who recently retired and I can't imagine losing him to violence.

I'm trying not to go down a slippery slope here but it's hard when so many careers and venues seem to not be safe anymore. WTH is wrong with people?

Hoping they catch the murderer and take him out of society before they kill someone else. Damnit.

  • Aundre Cross is the letter carrier who was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to multiple people who knew and loved him, including co-workers and members of his church community. A married father, Cross, 44, was remembered by those who knew him for his deep faith.
  • "He was a mentor to everybody," she said. "He was always ready with a prayer, a joke or a story. He never let anybody leave (any situation) without a smile on their face."
  • “He was a person that could light up the room," P added. "When he walked in to deliver our mail, he would literally light the funeral home up because he was always so jolly. He was a man that loved God with everything in him. He was going to make sure he left some type of biblical message with you.”

Andre sounds like a wonderful and beloved person.

It seems that LE and US Postal Service suspect the killing was related to his job, or they are giving that impression since he was killed while on the job.

Because he was a postal worker, I presume people would have known his routine and route and could have targeted him specifically. Or it could have been a general/random attack.

He could have been killed by:
- someone who hates postal workers
- someone who is angry with that particular postal office/team, or blames Andre because of something at work
- someone outside the office who blamed Andre for an incorrect delivery, or had an argument with him about their property, or other personal job-related matter
- someone who is racist
- someone who just wanted the thrill of killing someone
- someone who personally knew him and was angry with him or wanted to hurt someone he loved

I can't get the link to load :( Is that Aundre the mail carrier walking in the left picture?
The article doesn't say whether the person in the photo is Aundre. It only describes the vehicle. My guess is it's a photo of the perp. MOO

What happened during the incident?

According to police, Cross was shot at about 6 p.m. Dec. 9 on the 5000 block of North 65th Street, on Milwaukee’s northwest side. Surveillance video obtained by WITI-TV (Channel 6) and WISN-TV (Channel 12) shows a person walking across a yard, away from a silver vehicle, before going off camera. A gunshot is then heard and a person can then be seen running back to the vehicle.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service circulated photos of a vehicle suspected to be involved in the Dec. 9 shooting death of Aundre Cross, an 18-year veteran mail carrier. The vehicle is described as a silver Audi Q5 SUV with tinted windows.

On Nov. 18 around 2 p.m., Milwaukee police said a mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint near Hoyt and Medford.
Days later, blue USPS drop boxes in Shorewood at the main post office and another just down the street were emptied out. Shorewood police started investigating when four people came in saying checks had been altered. [snip] On Dec. 7 around 3 p.m., another mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint in the Riverwest neighborhood near Bremen and Auer.

Oh I see now. Someone in the silver vehicle got out, shots were heard, the person went back to the vehicle. For some reason I assumed the silver car had driven by and shot at Mr. Cross.

That's interesting. Sounds like someone had been tampering with mail in the drop boxes. Might be motive to shoot Mr. Cross if he knew and was going to report it.

Our world is too cruel and dangerous anymore. So sorry for Mr. Cross’ loved ones. Hope this monster(s) is found soon and removed from society. RIP Mr. Cross.

"Three people have been arrested and charged in connection with the killing of a Milwaukee mail carrier earlier this month.

Aundre Cross died while on the job in a shooting on Dec. 9 at 65th Street and Lancaster Avenue in Milwaukee.

The federal complaint alleges that Kevin McCaa, 36, and Charles Ducksworth Jr., 26, both of Milwaukee, killed or aided and abetted the killing of a postal employee."

"According to the federal complaint, investigators used surveillance video and cellphone records to track the three suspects.

The complaint says surveillance footage shows the suspects following Cross for 40 minutes from a silver Audi SUV while Cross delivered mail along his route.

According to the complaint, "Suspect A then crossed the street and approached the Victim from behind, at which point a gunshot can be heard on the footage. Suspect A then proceeded to run across the street..." in the direction of the Audi SUV.

The federal complaint suggests McCaa and Ducksworth Jr. were shipping drugs from California to addresses near their homes."

"The complaint says Cross scanned a package on Dec. 2, one week before his murder, as "Delivery Attempted- No Access to Delivery Location."

That package never made it back to the postal office as per protocol.

The complaint reads, "USPS business records indicate the scan occurred in the vicinity of North 77th Street and West Carmen Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is approximately one and a half miles away from the delivery address. Following the Subject Offense, Postal Inspectors visited the Victim's assigned USPS post office and were unable to locate Subject Parcel #1."

An investigator wrote in the complaint, "Based on my training and experience, Subject Parcel #1 being scanned as 'Delivery Attempted- No Access to Delivery Location', combined with evidence it was not returned to its original USPS delivery unit, could indicate that a USPS employee retained the parcel or provided it to someone else outside of normal operations."

I don't enjoy posting this comment and the one directly above, but the investigation has led in a different direction.

It seems that some drug dealers have been receiving shipments of illegal street drugs in the mail and one package turned up missing.

The drug dealers suspected that Aundre stole their package and they murdered him. The Postal Inspectors conducted their own investigation and the information they discovered led them to believe that the drug dealer's suspicions may have been correct.
