New vigil set for missing woman
Jan 4, 2012

snipped...

The event has a Facebook page called “Katelyn Markham Candlelight Vigil.” One of its organizers is a Fairfield Twp. resident, XXXXXXXXX, who did not know Markham at all. This is the next in a series of planned monthly vigils.

...A $25,000 reward has been offered through CrimeStoppers for information about Markham’s disappearance, but police say there haven’t been any promising tips or leads in the case.

Sorry I was off a little - it's a 30 second drive or a 1 minute walk:

Its walkable, and I would bet money it has surveillance. I am sure its mentioned in previous threads but would someone remind me, is the Fairfield PD running this investigation, or Butler County Sherriff?

This case sure haunts me! It is like she disappeared into thin air. Where are you Katelyn?

It haunts me too...no sign of a struggle? Nothing to indicate a crime took place. Makes it very difficult for LE to determine what has happened when an adult vanishes in this way. Even with Lauren too; I know she was on record as having had a "patry" night of some sort, but still, no clues at all. I can't see Katelyn allowing her family to worry this long if she wanted to disappear herself and I am sure Lauren didn't leave on her own. But because some women (and men) in this age group do sometimes up and take off, it makes it very hard for LE to figure out what happened. And Katelyn did not seem to have any threatening elements in her life that we know of. A "weird" boyfriend maybe but no arrest records in their pasts have surfaced, no reason for her to run or for him to harm her, not even any history of fights have come to light. Her coming to harm that seems so unlikely from what we have heard, yet it seems to have happened...JMO

It is so difficult. Without signs of a struggle, it appears she either left on her own or met foul play with someone she knew and trusted by going with that person. It is so strange! Unless she was just caught off guard by a stranger. I am afraid we might never know and that drives me crazy!

Where is Katelyn? Why do we know precious little more now than we did last August? I certainly hope LE's silence is a sign that they are investigating quietly and diligently, and not that this case has gone ice-cold.

Her father, David Markham, was appreciative of the turnout for the vigil and the attention his daughter’s disappearance is getting.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “I’m very grateful that people are not forgetting.”

Fairfield Police Chief Mike Dickey said he has two detectives assigned to the case who are constantly processing new information that comes in. He could not give details on the investigation, but assured the crowd that his department will never stop looking for Markham.

“We’re committed to finding her,” Dickey said, “whether it takes 90 days or 900 days.”

It's nice to hear that the police are still very committed to finding her.

This case haunts me. Will there ever be answers?

Hoping Katelyn will be found soon!

I am local, and I am angry. Why isn't she mentioned on the local news? Can't they mention her name and remind the people here that she has DISAPPEARED? Why are people not terrified for every sister/girlfriend/wife in this small city? This doesn't happen here...OR DOES IT? I cannot believe this has been so swept under the rug--

Katelyn's case is just as mysterious as Holly Bobo's, in my opinion; both young women disappeared from their homes, although Katelyn probably vanished in the night (even that is not really certain.) I do NOT believe the cases are connected, just saying that in both cases, the young women had steady boyfriends with no apparent problems in their relationships. We WS'er's all know the odds of a BF being the perp and they are high. But in these two cases, it is really difficult to get a handle on what really happened-Katelyn's more so than Holly's, IMO, yet Holly's case seems to get far more attention and is thought to be far more "mysterious" by many (mostly thanks to her brother.) Katelyn's disappearance SEEMS to hold more of a possibility that someone she knew harmed her, at least to me, while Holly's could well be a stranger abduction, at least in the way of a stalker that she may not have known she had. But I guess with so little known about the circumstances of Katelyn's case, that could apply to her as well.

Clearly police in Katelyn's case are not making progress in making the boyfriend out to be the culprit, or if they are, they are certainly keeping it to themselves. Of course it could be a case of suspicions but not enough evidence, which seems to be a growing trend in these cases. And a very disturbing trend, IMO, in that it seems very difficult to arrest anyone in these missing persons cases, a la Stacey Peterson.

I don't have any answers, but it seems to me that LEA's are really not set up to handle missing cases very effectively. I am sure they do what they can, in most cases, but it does seem that they come to a wall early on in these cases and just can't break through.
