It seems to me the body may have been moved. This spot seems to be used for dumping but no one saw or smelled anything in the past year and a half? The property owner called to complain about the dumping. Was it ever inspected by any locals (police, health dept)? And why would the skull be in a bag if the body was intact when dumped? If the bones were scattered maybe the skull in a bag was an attempt to hide it not thinking the other bones would raise suspicion (they may have looked like animal bones). My gut feeling tells me she was not at this location for the past 20 months.

Sorry for being graphic, but perhaps her head was covered before she was moved, right after being killed. Maybe whoever did it, didn't want to look at her face - too personal, too real. Would make it less personal to deal with if he/she couldn't actually see the person - if it was someone they knew, and knew well? Especially if this happened after a row or similar, if it hadn't been planned. In this scenario, I would guess the killer would still be shaken at what they had done, and this may have made disposing of her body easier?

Also, if she was dumped wrapped up in a bag, animal activity, flow of water etc could have moved the bones over time. Until we know what sized bag they are talking about, we can only guess.

Such a sad end to a promising life. Hope she gets justice and I'm glad her family can now give her a respectful and beautiful resting place.

On Thursday, 9 On Your Side anchor Clyde Gray sat down for a one-on-one interview with David Markham, who says the recent events "bring closure" but also "open a new chapter" in the mystery of what happened to his then-21-year-old daughter on August 13, 2011.

David Markham told Gray that he doesn't think his daughter died a "natural death."

"I don't believe Katelyn ended up in that spot by herself," he said.

I've been catching up on the posts and was thinking the very same thing, that the bag was used to cover her head/ face after death for the reasons you mentioned, and doesn't necessarily indicate suffocation, or the bag used as a "container" to transport the skull. The bone scatter is almost certainly the work of animals, which means when the body was placed there, something was present to attract them. I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time making my point without being overly graphic.

Wonder if they can recover fingerprints from the bag, after all this time?

Forensic anthropologists can pinpoint evidence of a traumatic injury, such blunt force trauma or a stab wound, but forensic anthropologists are not legally allowed to determine cause and manner of death, Murray said. That’s the job of a forensic pathologist, medical examiner or coroner.

Forensic anthropologists are also qualified to assess the conditions involving a person’s death, by analyzing skeletal trauma and separating the injuries caused by various instruments.

“I may be able to say to the coroner’s office how many blunt trauma injuries there are to the skull, or even what sequence or what direction they came from,” Murray said. “We just give information.”

Determining how long remains have been in the area is another aspect where forensic anthropologists assist criminal investigators. Often, the scientists use clues on and around the skeleton to determine how long the remains have been in an area, which depends on the skeleton’s access to insects and carnivores.

“If moss is growing on the skeleton, that suggests [it has] been there for a while,” Murray said. “Determining how long a skeleton has been some place is pretty difficult, there are just so many variables that can go into that.”

Big discrepancy between mom and son's statements. Mom's is all about Katelyn and J's is all about himself.

Yes there is.

But we don't have a clue what question(s) was asked of JC.

Hicks said he was looking for scrap metal Sunday morning when he started rummaging through a dump site along Big Cedar Creek, off U.S. 52. He said he pushed aside a black plastic bag and that uncovered her jawbone. When he opened the bag, he found her skull.

In this story he mentions a "black plastic bag". Wonder if it was a large garbage bag? Kroger bags are smaller and are tan in color.

The bones were scattered around a tree about 30 yards from the west bank of Big Cedar Creek. A skull wrapped in clumps of a woman’s brown hair was concealed in a black plastic sack, the kind you find at the local grocery store.

This has a video with more detail.

Ok, does anyone in the area know if any grocery stores used the small black bags 20 months ago? Our Walmart uses grey bags.

This bag may be a big clue for LE.

Not impossible, but the chances are pretty slim, I believe. I wonder if the trash found around the body holds clues. And just exactly when did the property owner report people were dumping garbage? Before or after Katelyn went missing? I've only read "a couple of years ago". I wish we knew for sure because it seems too coincidental.

I don't get the bit where he says she was so "violently taken from me". How does he know that?

EXACTLY - how does he know that, or is that telling??????

Also, it is again all about him. No outrage at who did this. No offer to do anything to find her killer.

I just realized, that the online statement is shorter than what I have recorded - so here is a pic of my TV with more!

Note: "not be able to talk" ---------> does that subliminally say he is dreading the next round of LE interviews????
"want to be" ----------> free and not arrested????
"figure out how to deal with this" and "I don't know how to deal with this" ---------> how to cover tracks??????
"I have never lost someone" ------> yes, we know - she was never lost or missing.

All JMHO - but nothing he says ever makes sense.

In one of the interviews, the gentleman that found Katelyn said he goes there a couple times a year to look for scrap (anyone else remember him saying that?). Does he mean the same spot or the general area? When was the last time he was there in the area he found Katelyn?

**sorry I don't have the link; going from memory

All about him. He even omits to say Katelyn's name.

Exactly the same conclusions I came to. What he DIDN'T say speaks volumes - nothing about wanting to find out who did this to her, no questions as to how she ended up where she was found, no hopes expressed that the police can solve this, no appeals to the public for help etc.

It came across that he was pissed that he'd got his life back on track and now this has to happen ...... well, that's how it sounded to me!
