Fairfield Twp. police Sgt. Brandon McCroskey said officials received information last weekend there might be evidence related to the search for Michael McKenney, 29.

“We talked to a couple of people and we, of course, wanted to verify that was accurate so they had the Butler County dive team come out and check and we didn’t find anything at all,” he said.

McCroskey said they searched Wednesday the water near the Linden Lake Apartments, and the police department will follow every lead they receive “so we can try to get some closure for the family.” However, part of the problem, he said, is some of the people believed to be involved in McKenney’s disappearance are now dead.

A possible male involved died from an overdose, and a woman directly involved died from medical issues, McCroskey said.

Did he have a girlfriend? Where was he working? So many questions in this case. Who were the two people that died were the names of them ever released? Was social media checked to see the last time he posted? Was everyone looked at and questioned perhaps he was getting a new job or he was just looking to get away, none of it really makes any sense. If a dog did pick up a scent one would thing they could have looked in the drain somehow. Was anything on his phone if he was a known user did they find any drugs ect. in the car? One giant mystery hopefully it will be solved.

Details of Disappearance
McKenney was last seen in Fairfield Township, Ohio; he was last heard from on May 23, 2020. At the time of his disappearance, he was living with his aunt and her family, after being discharged from a halfway house. He has never been heard from again.

The next day, McKenney's recently purchased car and was found at a bird sanctuary in Hueston Woods State Park in Preble County, Ohio. His cellular phone and tablet were still inside it.

According to McKenney's aunt, he had an unexplained sore on his neck just prior to his disappearance, and she had confronted him about it, suspecting he had relapsed and was using drugs again. He had also borrowed money from one sibling and asked another one to give him money. It's possible that he overdosed or that his disappearance was otherwise drug-related.

Police stated two of the possible suspects in McKenney's disappearance are now dead.

His case remains unsolved.

Remains possibly connected to a man who has been missing for more than two years were found in Hueston Woods State Park on Wednesday, according to the Fairfield Township Police Department.

Michael Allen McKenney, then 28, was reported missing on June 1, 2020, police said in a news release. Over the course of the last two and a half years, searches have been conducted in and around the area of Hueston Woods near the border of Butler and Preble counties.

Officials with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources located McKenney's vehicle and other personal items in the state park shortly after his family filed a missing persons report.

The remains were handed over to the Preble County Coroner's Office, which is conducting an investigation with the Fairfield Township Police Department and ODNR.

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) - Human remains that were found near Hueston Woods State Park in December 2022 are confirmed to be a local man that went missing two years ago, according to the Preble County Coroner.
