Welcome to Websleuths, Daytoncincy... You have some interesting thoughts on this. Just one thing you may not be aware of with posting to Websleuths, If you don't have a link to a Mainstream Media article to refer to, it must be stated that it is an opinion. That way no one gets opinions and facts mixed up. Opinions are fine, just let it be known that they are opinions...

I believe Daytocincy DID post correctly as I see the statement was prefaced with “IMO.” I’m not trying to cause a disagreement, just supporting our new poster. Welcome Daytocincy.

Sorry but where did I say she did not post IMO? Or that anything was wrong or incorrect about her post? I wrote, " Just one thing you may not be aware of" and stated how things are done on this site and why. If you say you are not trying to cause a disagreement, is that not what you have done?

Relative to have no calls with suspects in Ohio family massacre

September 2, 2019

"WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) - A judge says the mother of a woman charged in an Ohio family's slaying must stop talking with her jailed daughter and have no phone calls with her or three other relatives charged in the case.

The mother, 66-year-old Rita Newcomb, isn't charged in the 2016 slayings of eight people from the Rhoden family but pleaded not guilty to forging documents in a related matter.

Prosecutors argued Newcomb violated conditions of her own house arrest by discussing the case with her jailed daughter, Angela Wagner, in taped phones conversations this summer.

A Pike County judge last week decided against revoking bail and jailing Newcomb but told her to have no more calls with her relatives charged in the shootings : her daughter, son-in-law and two adult grandsons..."

I’m sorry if I sounded like I was trying to start something but I wasn’t. It is very hard to see emotions in a text and sometimes what one intends to say does not always come across that way and is interpreted in a different tone to someone else. I’ve watched posters get easily upset over something that was said that was not intended the way it came out. I have been a recipient a couple of times myself. I, like many other posters, have trolled all the comments for three yrs, afraid to comment for fear of being shot down immediately. In fact that actually happened to me right here on this sight on my first comment and I almost quit commenting several times. We are all uptight and anxious to get the trials moving all the while carrying on our stressful lives behind the scenes.

When I read your comment to Daytocincy, I thought you sounded like you were admonishing DC for not including links. Maybe you were only intending to instruct him/her in the direction of the rules but his/her comments were already well within the rules and was a great contribution. I apologize for sounding like I was trying to meddle but it won’t happen again. <modsnip>

But Angela Wagner called her husband, George "Billy" Wagner and Christopher Rhoden, Sr., "best friends," and vehemently denied the family had any involvement in their deaths in an exclusive interview with the Enquirer earlier this month.

Her comments then and those of her son, Jake Wagner, came in several Facebook and email exchanges with The Enquirer.

Please let's concentrate on finding the real monsters who did this," Jake Wagner, 24, said in a combined email sent to The Enquirer in early June.

Angela Wagner's comments came just weeks after authorities conducted three searches of the Wagner's properties in Pike and Adams counties. Authorities have repeatedly declined to discuss the searches or indicate what they may have seized. The Wagners denied knowing why the properties were searched.

Rumors and speculation about the family have swirled since the day of the massacre but intensified in recent weeks after the family sold their farm, moved all their belongings to another farm and took a trip to Alaska. Angela Wagner called that trip a family vacation. They returned to Ohio late last month but Angela Wagner said she and other family members were too busy to meet in person with The Enquirer.

Authorities said Monday they believe the family has now relocated to Alaska.

The Wagner family was the subject of three searches on farms in Pike and Adams counties in May 2017 tied to the Rhoden family massacre. The family photo was taken during a recent trip to Alaska. Pictured from left to right are: Bulvine; Angela Wagner, her son, George, her husband, George "Billy", her son, Edward "Jake," and his daughter, Sophia, 3. Jake Wagner is the former longtime boyfriend of Hanna Rhoden, who was killed in the April 22, 2016 killings in Pike County. The two are the parents of Sophia

Dan Tierney, a spokesman for the Ohio Attorney General's Office, said he could not comment on whether Ohio authorities have reached out to Alaska authorities in the case. He said the Wagners have not been charged with any crimes related to the Rhoden killings.

Angela Wagner said the couple wanted to legally formalize their agreed-upon shared custody arrangement. After they split up, each parent had custody of Sophia for one week, usually alternating each Saturday.

Angela Wagner said what happened to us in the last few weeks has been devastating and will follow us for the rest of our lives,'' Angela Wagner wrote in an email. "Hanna was loved by all of us. She was like a daughter to me then and now. Her loss still hurts to this day especially when we see her every day in Sophia."

Those who have information about the Wagner family are asked to call the BCI tip line at 1-855-BCI-OHIO (224-6446) or the Pike County Sheriff's Office at 740-947-2111.

Any information provided will remain confidential, and a $10,000 reward is still in effect.

Quite a web of lies they wove there. They left out the fact they were trying to forge custody/guardianship docs and were willing to kill 8 members of the Rhoden family to accomplish that. A lot of hubris, thinking they wouldn't be caught.

Here's another good in-depth analysis of last week's hearing

Wagner grandmother remains free - The Record Herald

"Canepa insisted the conversations between Newcomb and Wagner were substantial and definitely involved the ongoing trials. She talked about how Wagner urged her mother to use certain “buzzwords” when talking about any custody papers. Canepa added 11 of 13 calls between Newcomb and her daughter in the months of June and July included discussions about the Rhoden cases.

In the end, while Deering said he took violations of the conditions of Newcomb’s house arrest seriously, he did not revoke that house arrest. Instead, Deering said he was expanding the communication ban to include any phone calls between any of the suspects in the Rhoden case and the South Webster home where Newcomb lives with her mother. Deering said the ban applies to incoming or outgoing calls on the home’s landline as well as Newcomb’s cell phone.

Neither Canepa nor Pike County Prosecutor Rob Junk made any objections to Deering’s ruling. Newcomb’s attorney, former Portsmouth Mayor Franklin Gerlach successfully lobbied the judge for leniency for his client. Deering did promise any further violations brought to his attention will result in Newcomb spending time behind bars prior to her October trial. Publicly, Deering gave no reason for his leniency. Attorneys for both sides and the presiding judge spent most of the long recess huddled behind closed doors and courtroom rumors were rampant some deal was struck during those discussions. Of course, there is no way to verify those rumors."

Again, the problem many of us have with this ruling is that it doesn't stop communication (plotting & scheming) between the other 3 murder defendants in the Wagner family and the rest of the Wagner and Newcomb families, nor any other criminal elements who might be involved in the Rhoden murders.

It sounded to me like you insinuated I did something inappropriate. But it's all good.

I do hope Judge Deering is hearing all the controversy over his decision to not revoke Rira Newcomb's bond. Should we be posting as comments to a l local newspaper instead? Let's do this. I choose The Portsmouth Times or The chillicothe Gazette. Yout preference? The truth needs to be recounted on every single week , and transcribed oh here w's owd for word,

That's up to anyone who is concerned. Personally, I'm going to wait a little while to see what happens. I found it a little surprising that the reporter implied the Judge wants to make sure to be in charge of all the trials. IANAL, but that's a lot for him to handle. We'll see.

I'm going to try again to see if I can get any of our WS members who are verified attorneys to take a look at the latest developments and offer some clarification.

Portsmouth would be more local than Chillicothe. I offer that as information not advocacy for critique of Judge Deering in the media.

Yes, it's a bit troubling. Even the news media is surprised and a little concerned. I know some folks believe the judge is just giving the killers and accomplices "enough rope to hang themselves", but JMO, it's very risky.

The Rhoden Family Massacre is one of the biggest mass murders in Ohio history. It would be a terrible scandal if the killers were allowed to walk free. It would also be very dangerous for the people who live in that community. These remorseless killers wouldn't hesitate to seek revenge, JMO.

Couldn't agree more.

This is why I can not understand the lack of MM interest in this case. There is nearly no coverage on national news and very little on local news. Hopefully they are monitoring things and will show more interest when the trials start.

Eight unsolved murders in Pike County, Ohio

There were some mix ups, some other scrutinized decisions. And it was almost funny the way authorities first asked people, even those maybe involved in petty crime, to come forward. “We have made it clear that this is a murder investigation and we are after the murderers of eight people,” DeWine saidin November of 2016. Seven months before, local news reported that “Reader has mentioned the family, friends and neighbors of the Rhoden family as possibly obstructing the investigation." In January 2017, a cousin of Chris Sr., Josh Rhoden, was arrested on drug-trafficking charges, based on evidence gathered during the murder investigation.

The LE has a lot of evidence of corruption in and around Pike County JMO.

LE and prosecutors were scratching their heads on this case for quite a while. But that's because everything was tied up in one family who planned and carried out the murders and didn't leak any info (that we know of) outside their small circle. At the same time, this "upstanding, church-going family" was feeding false information about the murders to LE. Imagine how frustrating it was to be getting really good tips from a family "close" to the Rhodens, then chasing it all down to dead ends. In all the investigation of cartels and drug gangs and trafficking, all they came up with was one relative who was an addict selling drugs to others, likely to support his own habit.

To their credit, LE finally figured it out and in the process, came across a lot of evidence pointing to the guy who had the strongest motive for murder and his family.
