Many people I know have started using FB Messenger exclusively to send and receive SMS/MMS and, of course, longer messages. They permit or choose for messenger to be their default messaging app. That could come into play here. I'm sure most of y'all know, FB messenger records the time a message was sent and what time the message was read/opened. Although, some if/then apps allow a user to override the timestamp on when a message was read on FB messenger. Data recovery can be a very lengthy process, especially if someone intentionally tries to hide evidence. Maybe the investigation is taking so long because they are trying to nail down everyone's timelines with available data??

Then you have folks like several I know, the majority of them men, who refuse to use the smartphones, and have hung on to the old style clam-shell phones, and cheaper bills, that do nothing but make phone calls, and send and receive a text message. We don't know what kind JM had.

I thought I would throw this out here so we could all pick it over and punch holes in it. Anyone who has any thing else please add to it.

Fact: Reader said this was "bigger than a grow op, than stolen cars, than cockfighting."
Drug trafficking would be bigger than grow ops.

Fact: Dewine said "We know more about the criminal activity that has been going on in Pike county for decades."
JW, GW4 and JM's kids could not be involved in a decades long criminal enterprise. Even one decade and they would be just out of their teens. Two, just out of diapers.

Fact: BCI had a huge amount of cars towed from the crime scene.
What did they find out about those cars to tow them? Or what did they find in them? Were they being used as a safe place to store drugs before those drugs were moved along the Highway 23 corridor?

Fact: Reader/BCI had the mobile homes/crime scenes towed.
Why? What was in them?

Fact: BCI had an enclosed trailer belonging to the W's towed.
What was in it?

Fact: The highway 23 drug task force were among LE that searched the W's property.
They investigate drug smuggling along the Highway 23 corridor.

Fact: The Peterson RD farm was in JW and GW4's name but GW3 and AW lived there with them.
Why was the farm in their kids name? Was their credit rating not high enough to finance it? To keep creditors from leveraging it?

Fact: Both JW and his grandparents GW2 and FW's property was searched.
Why was the grandparents property searched? What were they looking for? Why was the Highway 23 task force and SWAT called in to search their property?

Fact: CR1, KR, DR, JM, BJM, GW3, and AW are all about the same age.
Pike county is small population wise. Did they know each other for a long period of time?

Fact: The R's, M's, and W's have all lived in Pike county for generations.
They all lived about 10 miles from each other. Did they all attend school together?

Fact: JM sent a text message to JW's phone the night of the murders.
If the house was in the son's name because of credit rating, were the cell phones also in JW's name for the same reason?

Fact: LM says that text message was sent at 9:00 PM, LE said at 2:00 AM.
We assume the text was sent to JW. Could it have been sent to GW3?

Fact: The money appears to be with the W's. Nice house, big horse ranch, ect.
Could they have been the head of a criminal ring that goes back decades?

Fact: CR1 had 30k to pay down on DR's new home.
Could that be money earned with the W's? Such as providing a place to store drugs before they were moved on along the Highway 23 corridor?

Fact: LE believes JM and BJM are involved and or withholding information.
Could the M's, R's, and W's been involved in some kind of criminal activity together?

Fact: LM said when asked if JM and JW were friends "No. Other than seeing each other at the derby's and stuff." JM and JW did not know each other that well.
But was he friends with GW3?

Fact: LM when asked about his kids involvement said "I would stake my life that my son and daughter did not kill the family. I don't know about the rest of them....I guarantee it."
But could other members of a crime ring involving them all be responsible? Could CR1 have threatened to expose them all if the W's went after full custody of little SW?

BBM
3:38 Drugs likely have nothing to do with the killings.
4:36 It wasn't because they had a couple of little indoor grows, wasn't because there was just a couple of cars on the property that may have been stolen, it's much bigger than that.

Flip phone, my mom and dad both stubbornly hang on to and refuse to upgrade. And they still refer to them as "car phones."

If it was connected to criminal activity that went on for decades, was bigger than stolen cars, etc. but it wasn't about drugs, what could it be? Just curious, what do you think?

Is LM staking his life on his 4th child, and her family, as well? Not pointing the finger at her but unsure if she's rec'd any questioning and polys.

Fact: JW still has R, and M, family who are friends in his JW, sm account. DS can't say the same and he's blood.

The government issued cell phones are huge around here. There's little tents set up in parking lots where you can get a free phone with minutes/texting if you qualify. You have to receive some sort of assistance or be on social security.

If you're killing time waiting for JM's hearing at 1:00 pm, you may want to visit WCPO's front page. They have an article on the 40th anniversary of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire that killed 165 people. It still has a huge impact on people in the southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky area. I recall it being all over the news back then, I'd just graduated from college and moved back home. That was a busy summer for tragic news. The Oklahoma Girl Scout murders in Oklahoma were a few weeks later.

I read a book about the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire many years ago, so have forgotten a lot. I do recall George Clooney's dad, Nick Clooney was a news anchor back then and he traveled there to cover it. One positive development was major improvements nationwide in raising fire safety standards for public buildings.

ETA: And, of course, Jeff Ruby was at the Club that night and is featured in the story. That guy knows how to get publicity.

I remember the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire very well. I was in middle school in Ohio, and it was a huge and incredibly tragic story.

The other big story Ohio/Kentucky story I remember from college days in Ohio was the school bus crash that killed 27 children returning from King's Island. This was terrible because the victims were trapped inside the bus which then caught on fire. Many changes to improve school bus safety came about after this tragedy.

Oh, how sad. I hadn't heard the story about the bus crash. I didn't live in Ohio then, so didn't hear of it. The Beverly Hills Club fire was terrible, but it's positive that so many people did get out that night. Fire fighters, staff, officials an excellent job. Very sad that so many people were affected.

I just finished reading this article. This is the best coverage I have ever seen.

And Jeff Ruby - I know this guy had done much charity work in Cincinnati and probably elsewhere but he never misses an opportunity for self promotion and publicity.

Three men in the family have clung to them. One tried a smartphone and despised it. Two of the three have laptops and all claim a phone only needs to do one thing, make a phone call. Texting is just a frivolous bonus that they all come with.

According to Chris Grave's twitter feed, JM and his family, parents have arrived at the PikeCo courthouse.

Good question! If not drugs, what criminal activity could it be in a small rural county that has been occurring for decades?Remember LM said he was tired of things being covered up (don't have a link but an early interview). Seriously, what could it be that would be considerd "big" if not drugs?!!
If it was connected to criminal activity that went on for decades, was bigger than stolen cars, etc. but it wasn't about drugs, what could it be? Just curious, what do you think?

I think that he's saying that drugs as the reason, in and of itself, was not why they were killed. Did trying to find their killers, and why the R family was killed, open up a Pandora's box? Yep. None of those may have been the actual reason the Rs and HHG were murdered though. My top theory has always been mountain justice. Quite possibly inner-family. Someone in that family has done something so harsh, that it has been seen as unforgivable. They didn't trust LE, or couldn't go to LE, to take care of the matter so they handled it themselves. When this first happened, I ran this by my kid who lives further up in the hills, and my parents. All of us from the region. Both said the same thing that I did. Someone in the R family did someone so foul, and it could very well be family, that they sought revenge. Now what that foul was, idk. But mountain justice is still a thing. All of us could be wrong, too.

Ok, I waited until last December to get my first smart phone. :shame: Before that, I had one similar to the kind that LM was holding in one of his early interviews. Our service is spotty here at home, so I never felt the need until someone close by had a health care crisis. Out in the hills around Union Hill Rd, and the area, the reception is poor, too. The Verizon guy said ours is a problem from being down in a valley and surrounded by trees. He said lots of trees (being in a large forested area) can interfere with cell phone signals.

Even with the smart phone, I usually have to step out on the deck when using it to keep calls from dropping. When I leave the neighborhood and go up the hill to the main road, I start getting pings for messages that were sent hours or days ago. Can almost guarantee the same for people who live around Peebles/Piketon.

ETA: Just saw a tweet from Chris Graves. She said though the hearing was for 1 pm, his case hasn't been called yet. I'm guessing there are others called before his.

I still believe the murders are a result of a festering custody issue with other underlying issues.

I remember when that happened. We'd pass near it when we went to Ohio to visit relatives. It was kind of a fascinating place to me.

And yeah, Jeff Ruby does seem to know how to score publicity. I've never seen any scandals though. Tried to eat at his place a few weeks back when we came to Cinci but didn't realize you had to have reservations so far in advance! Wow! We went to another place down the street and it was very good.

JMO, it could be than one motive. Custody as the "precipitating" factor, the problem that set it off, but before that a long-simmering animosity (predisposing factor) related to other illegal activity - competing interests in MJ trade or Chris Sr.'s knowledge of other illegal activities, but refusing to participate, concern that he was talking to LE, etc.

Chris Sr may have been a burr under someone's saddle for a while and when the custody fight came up, it was a justification to get rid of him and his family. Two birds with one stone, so to speak. "Mountain justice" is something you can call it, but people have to have a motive for the justice they're seeking. A really risky thing to do, so it probably took some planning and possibly the hiring of pros or semi-pros to do it.
