GUILTY OH - Richard, 84, & Gladis Russell, 85, Bellefontaine, 16 Feb 2011

  • #801
“We saw [Richard Russell's] head was smashed in like somebody had thrown him out there.”

Authorities said the head wound was sustained to the body after death.

I hope Sam Littleton's time in jail is the most miserable and painful experience that anyone can have anywhere or any time. I hope he suffers every single day of the rest of his life. There, I said it.

He has already admitted that he murdered Gladis. If he has treated the remains of this dear, sweet woman anything like the way he treated her husband's remains, like garbage, I will simply lose it.

I searched for cotton mills in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area, and while there are quite a few, most of them are just branch offices or retail stores, with no cotton fields attached (Propex is one, for example, on Industry Drive). But once again even if there WERE cotton fields attached to those sites, as we've heard again and again it's not the season for growing cotton, so the fields would not be white or glowing or both. Littleton is just so useless. He can't even say where he left someone he killed? Two people? How difficult is that to remember.

P.S. Thank you so much for getting in touch with LE regarding the quarries. I hope that information will help in some way. And thanks for any blessings sent my way. I wholeheartedly accept (and need!) all blessings! :)

P.S.S. I am just about to write to Martin Marietta Materials on Pelican Dr. just to give them a heads-up to be on the alert.

Doesn't it look like the Propex plant is near the quarry?

What I was thinking of was like a cotton processing plant. Where they take the cotton bolls and do whatever they do. That could result in cotton fibers blowing around. That could combine with the glowing white sand and have made him think he was in a cotton field.

Great idea on letting the owner know.

Hey you did the work, you should get the credit. I just acted as a liaison

Yes, I am the one who mentioned it mysteriew.

I have several friends and family members who are LE and they have always told me when they are searching an area that is one of the first things they look for.

However the thought saddens me greatly. Buzzards are scavengers and they quickly can leave the body skeletonized.

And the very warm weather we have been having is not helping anything either.

Sorry for being so graphic.

IMO

LOL I knew someone did but couldn't remember who. (And I was too lazy to look back and see who)

LOL I live in the country and I never see a gathering of buzzards circling an area without getting an urge to go see what they are circling. Been here too long to believe that it has to be a dead animal.

Very good thinking about a cotton processing plant. I like that idea! Right now I'm thinking Propex is probably not what we're looking for since I've found they mainly produce carpet-backing materials. Is that cotton? I don't know. But their location is directly west of the quarries.

Surely there are other cotton-processing companies in Chattanooga. I'm checking.

Where ever it is, it will be directly off of 75. IF we can believe his statement "on the other side of town," I believe it will be a bit further down 75. He was tired, delusional (probably), scared and whatnot - he would stick to the main freeway that he knew. Gladis will not be found via many turns or winding roads off of 75. IMO, MOO, all that.

I imagine we'd find a lot more bodies if people were like us...

We had to trade vehicles... so I drive a 4 wheel drive truck now.

After having to come pull the minivan out a couple of times... because I saw birds, or something on the side of the road. I had to pull over to see what it was and the minivan got stuck if it was muddy or there was an inch of snow on the side of the road.

When Susan Powell went missing and wasn't found by Christmas, he decided the minivan had to go... he knew he was going to spend so much time pulling me out. :innocent:

Fortunately, if it is a deer, or skunk or bird... it is usually readily visible while you are driving. So I feel it IS worth pulling over if it is something that isn't visible from the road.

If people were more observant... I wonder how many more people would be found?

I hope they find Gladis today.

Police in Chattanooga, Tennessee say the man suspected of killing Gladis Russell told them they can find her body in their city.

SL really ticks me off! He's already confessed. Why doesn't he just tell exactly where (I think he knows pretty darn close) Gladis is. He is wasting precious time and resources. He can receive the DP just for Tiffany's murder alone. He might as well quit with these cat and mouse games. Gladis you deserved so much more than this...

ETA: wonder what "the other side of the city" means? Does I-75 make a loop around Chattanooga or did SL really go off the beaten path to "get rid of" Gladis?

To some extent I can understand why he is confused. He was running, probably concentrating more on driving and trying not to get stopped than he was watching where he was. He probably had road fatigue and sleep deprivation. Not to mention paranoia.

When I have to drive long distances I pretty much zone out on the freeway. I have been known to drive right past the exit I was looking for and not remember much of the drive. And I wasn't on the run, afraid of being caught, and sleep deprived.

So in a way I can kinda understand why he didn't know exactly where he was.

I'm not so sure. I think he does know, but I could be wrong. Your theory is certainly understable, but something tells me that he just doesn't want to be completely cooperative. I just don't like this whole thing. Tiffany, the Russell's, their families. None of them deserved any of this.

Chattanooga Police will search until 7p.m. this evening. Public Information Officer Rebecca Royval said, "they've exhaustively searched areas where Littleton said he disposed of Gladis Russell. "They don't plan on searching tomorrow, unless they get more tips."

A local cadaver dog trainer said, searching for a body can be a huge task, even with trained dogs searching 100s of miles." Law enforcement could need at least one hundred certified cadaver dog teams," said Jerry Azzi, owner of Azzi International Service for Dogs. Azzi has 25 years of experience training dogs to detect people, explosives, and narcotics.

Yeah actually I do believe he didn't know exactly. He had been on the run for a couple of days by the time he dumped them. He was making mistakes (remember the driving with his lights off that almost got him stopped?) Where he was wouldn't have been as important to him as being away from Ohio and not getting stopped. And he had no reason to remember where he dumped them, all he wanted was to be rid of them. He was also driving in an area that he didn't have any reason to be familiar with. So he would have been concentrating on remembering landmarks not routes, so that he could find his way back to 75.

I think he does know too. The terrain in Chattanooga is far different than it is in Valdosta. He would know if the inclines were steep or if the land was flat where he disposed of Gladis.

Littleton told police he remembers exiting off I-75, "traveling for a period of time on a paved road, then turning on a side road made of sand where he placed the body of Gladi Russell in what he described as a 'white, blowing cotton field.'"

http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_195688.asp

Every description I see is a little different. This one makes it really sound like cotton. Maybe near a cotton mill?

I'm a first time poster, but have been around here a while....found you all during the Xenia runaway mom case.

While I think the find on the last page regarding the "quarry" sounds promising, I couldn't help but wonder what else might look like a white glowing (or blowing) cotton field (especially this time of year). My husband and I do some vegetable gardening so I've done lots of research about all aspects of it (I love the internet!). There are products called "floating row cover" that allow a farmer to plant crops several weeks earlier than the last frost date in the area. It appears that Chattanooga's last frost date is around April 18th. Many cold weather crops can be planted weeks before the frost date and floating row covers will allow them to plant even earlier. These row covers could possibly give the appearance of cotton. There are some pretty good pictures on the right hand side of the link below.
