OH - Shawn Michael GRATE: 3 bodies found, Ashland/Madison, Sept 2016

  • #261
I'm watching the video of the hearing here: http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com...r-suspect-shawn-grates-bond-hearing/90424758/
My observations:
They are calling the abduction victim "Jane Doe" for protection of her identity.
Then he said Grate is accused of causing the death of "Mary Doe" sometime between August 16 and Sept 13th 2016. I wonder if that is just because they had not ID'd Elizabeth yet when the charges were filed?
He requested court appointed council.
He has no address other than the Ashland county jail
He is not receiving any form of government assistance (food stamps, disability, etc)
When asked if he was employed, Grate replied "Not no more, I was working in Save-a-lot"
He has no checking accounts or other banking accounts with cash in them.
Next hearing in Monday Sept 19, 2016 at 7:45 AM
They read a list of his past charges, if anyone caught anything not on the timeline, let me know thanks.
He was ordered to have no contact of any form (including social media) with Jane Doe.
He will have to wear a tracking anklet if he gets out on bond

Am I reading this right? They're going to let him out with just a tracking device? What is wrong with LE, the prosecutor and courts in that town?

Only if someone stumps up $1m first.

Only if he can make a $1 Million bail bond. The judge said he would also have to have an address before they let him out. He is homeless, unemployed and has no bank accounts and no assets. Everyone from his past either claims they never knew him or says they have severed their relationship with him long ago. The words "monster", "crazy" and "deadbeat dad" were used to describe him to the press by those who knew him well. I don't think he is getting out anytime soon.

  • #264
I hoped for the amount to be higher or no bond due to multiple charges and his criminal record. All someone would need to bail him out would be 100k or a house, unless the 10% bail thing is just a Texas thing.

Rumors of more than a dozen people missing from Ashland/Mansfield area led a paper to look into it: http://www.norwalkreflector.com/Law-Enforcement/2016/09/16/Rumors-of-missing-persons

List published by the paper:

  • Tiera Evans, 16, Mansfield, Aug. 21
  • Elizabeth A. Griffith, 29, Ashland, Aug. 20
  • Mariah M. Witherspoon, 17, Mansfield, July 24
  • Kisean Butler, 15, Mansfield, June 12
  • Latia Dotson, 17, Sandusky, May 1
  • Ian C. Landis, 16, Massillon, April 19
  • William Kirk, 16, Gallion, March 17
  • Derek Roop, 18, Oberlin, Feb. 26
  • Jamaria Brown, 17, Sandusky, Feb. 1

Not saying any of these cases are related but it's pretty unsettling...

ETA: clearly this was published before Elizabeth Griffith was named as the second body in Ashland.

ETA2: I have now created thread for every person on this list. A majority of these missing have no photos and no other press or info about them except what is on the Ohio Attorney General's website: http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/...Ohio-Missing-Persons/All-Missing-Persons.aspx

Depends on whether its a cash or surety bond.

That's what is published elsewhere. Her age is not on her thread because I couldn't find it in the early missing reports. Quotes in the press about her are only from friends so I wonder if she has any family? Just so sad.

  • #269
This would just be a horrible idea and no you can't legally sue people for owning a vacant home.

Definitely not for the intentional torts of another....Unless the other is your minor kid.

I haven't seen anything so far about her family either.

I keep trying to understand all this and make sense of it. I can't imagine what these families are going through right now. To lose your loved one at the hands of such a monster, knowing they were discarded like they were. I don't believe I'd be able to handle it. RIP Elizabeth and Stacy

When you hover over the date (1999) on his facebook, it says Jan. 1, 1999 @ 4:00am. The entry to facebook was March 10, 2014 @ 8:44pm. I don't think the date is accurate though. I checked when he graduated and it has a time and date of Jan. 1, 1995 @ 4:00am.

He was pretty violent that year according to his records but it does appear it's the woman he had a child with & another woman in Oct. 1999.

http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com...hawn-grate-has-had-many-run-ins-law/90362328/

The latest 4 women he murdered/kidnapped don't appear to have been connected to him via children, marriage or living together.

Yeah, I saw that, but I just figured he was filling in where he'd traveled, or lived, at that point in history. I've got link on mine, with a date and the location, but, FB wasn't event invented at that point in time.

  • #272
I probably should have said that the January 1, 1995 & January 1, 1999 dates were default fb dates added at a later date in 2010. I don't do facebook but have had an account since 2009. The things people put on fb are astonishing at times. Thank goodness for the criminals who post everything.

I'm not sure that I'm following you. I do use FB, and am not a criminal, and I am capable of setting FB dates to any time that I choose. It will still show a date that I added them, and when someone hovers the item they'll see that, but I can put the actual date of the event in there. For example, if I added a place that I lived, it may show the actual date/time that I added it, but I can personally choose the year that I lived/visited there, which, for example, I'll use; Kansas City, MO in 1986. If I were to add KC, MO, FB would default to the current Month/Day/Year, but, I could personally select July 31, 1986, if that's what I want FB to reflect. If I'm misunderstanding, I apologize.

I do agree that what folks put on FB can be somewhat, well, eye rolling.

During the hearing, which was broadcast via a Skype video conference, Grate was charged with three felonies — one count of kidnapping and two counts of murder. Ashland County Common Pleas Court Judge Ron Forsthoefel set Grate’s bond at $1 million, citing his lengthy criminal record dating back to 1994, which included a previous abduction charge in 1999. During Friday’s hearing, Forsthoefel told Grate if he were able to post his bond, he couldn’t have contact with the rescued victim and would be constrained to a 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew. He also would have a GPS electronic monitor.

Just. . .wow. After a couple-three of those red flags in that history you'd think maybe they'd try something different. Thanks, for putting this together, Gardner.

It would be worth giving him LWOP if he gave up any other names/whereabouts of any other women he's murdered. I have a weird feeling that there are more. Give those families peace, or at least closure.

I hope they are taking a closer look at all the other burned down vacant houses in the area that were posted earlier in this thread and the circumstances surrounding the fires.

There are a few people reported missing, but I imagine there are many other folks that are NOT reported missing, like the 911 caller. Especially homeless people or women/men who are known to be MIA for long periods of time due to drug use. It's hard to believe he all of a sudden started doing this in June.
