Were her keys in the ignition or lying elsewhere in the car? Did she ever make it to the store?

ETA: apparently she made it if they found the ice tea with her belongings… Wonder how she seemed while in the store. Was she alone? Any odd customers hanging out?
from what i understand she got to the store and she went in. i think keys were on seat but i am not 100 percent

Retiring chief says goodbye | Miami Valley Today

"Jamison was a detective when Farrell, 18, went missing in Piqua on Aug. 8, 1994, when she was last seen leaving her family’s residence on Haverhill Drive in Piqua at approximately 10 a.m. that day.

While Jamison had never met her before, he said her image is one that is etched in his mind. He said she is presumed dead and the department has had a number of false confessions occur with that case, including one man who wrote claiming to have killed Farrell. The department has also investigated and ruled out possible serial killers that web sleuths have linked to Farrell’s disappearance."

Wonder if he is speaking of Hall here...MOO

I came across another thread on Websleuths about another female who disappeared under similar circumstances that Shaylene Marie Farrell went missing.

The other missing female is Nancy Stewart Wilke, 20, who disappeared on August 12, 1967 in Waycross, Georgia.

Nancy Stewart Wilke was married and she was an employee at the Pic 'N' Save grocery store in Waycross.

Nancy went home after finishing her shift at the grocery store on August 12, 1967. Nancy later returned to the grocery store to shop.

After a bag boy helped Nancy carry out her groceries to her car, Nancy locked her purse in her car and returned to the store to check her work schedule.

Nancy Stewart Wilke was never seen or heard from again after she left the grocery store.

Nancy's car was found parked in the grocery store parking lot with her groceries and purse inside her car.

Among the similarities I noticed between the disappearances of Nancy Wilke and Shaylene Farrell are:

  • They both worked at grocery stores with similar names.
  • Their purses, purchased items, and vehicles were found parked in the grocery store parking lot.
  • Both had dark brown shoulder length hair.
  • Both disappeared at the same time 27 years apart.
Nancy Wilke disappeared on Saturday August 12, 1967.

Shaylene Farrell disappeared on Monday August 8, 1994.

I suspect that both disappearances probably aren't related, but it just seems odd to me that two different women disappear from grocery stores with similar names at the same time 27 years apart from each other in different areas.

from what i understand she got to the store and she went in. i think keys were on seat but i am not 100 percent

Among my thoughts about when Shaylene's car was found at the grocery store parking lot are:

Were all of the car doors locked?

Were all of the windows rolled up?

Was Shaylene's drivers license still in her purse?

Apologies but...the only way I can think to help this case at this point is to consider if she could be a found-but- unidentified Jane Doe. Could someone please list her known rule-outs? Here is her NamUs link. Thank you:

She has a birthmark on her left thigh above her knee and a scar on her right leg above her knee. Farrell smoked cigarettes, but drank only occasionally in 1994. Four of her teeth are missing and she has fillings in eleven other teeth. She may wear eyeglasses.

Details of Disappearance

Farrell was last seen leaving her family's residence on Haverhill Drive in Piqua, Ohio at approximately 10:00 a.m. on August 8, 1994. She planned to run a quick errand to buy a bottle of Lipton Iced Tea at the nearby Pick-N-Save grocery store in the 1500 block of Covington Avenue, where she had held a part-time job for the past two weeks.

Farrell never returned home and has not been seen again. She was reported missing after she did not show up for her 7:00 p.m. shift at work. Her mother's silver 1981 Chevrolet Malibu, which she had been driving, was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of the Pick-N-Save on Route 36 in Piqua later in the day. There was no sign of her at the scene. She did not take any money, clothing, or identification when she disappeared.

Prior to her disappearance, Farrell's mother had caught her smoking marijuana and Farrell moved out of her parents' home and in with a friend as a result. She maintained very close contact with her family, however, and moved back in with them several weeks later.

Investigators initially believed Farrell simply left home voluntarily again when she disappeared in August 1994, but her mother and her best friend disagreed, and the police eventually decided she had probably met with foul play.

Investigators suspect Christopher J. Below was possibly involved in Farrell's case. A photograph of him is posted with this case summary. He is a suspect in several murders and disappearances of young women, including Mary Kushto, Kristina Porco and Heather Teague. Below pleaded guilty to attempted involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting of Kathern Fetzer, whose body was never found. He is currently incarcerated in an Ohio prison.

It should be emphasized that he has not been charged in connection with any case other than Fetzer's and only conjecture links him to Farrell's case.

Farrell was a student at Piqua High School in 1994; she disappeared shortly before the start of her senior year. Her case remains unsolved.

Thirty years.

I've been driving from GA-> MI and back and think of her every time I pass Piqua.

Since her car was found where she said she was going, maybe she ran into someone she knew at the store? Did she manage to get in or do they not know? If Shaylene knew these two suspects it's possible that they got her out of the place without drawing too much attention, maybe to smoke in her vehicle or something similar...
Did the police search the car? Although no blood or DNA was found, knowing if Shaylene left any belongings could be an important clue...
I wonder if they searched the store... what a coincidence that they randomly grabbed her from the store she worked at while she was just a customer...
Christopher J. Below is trash... he deserves to die and in the most painful way possible... a miserable serial killer...
whatever it may be
Rest in peace Shaylene

Very little is known what LE did or didn’t do at the time, but since they treated her disappearance as a runaway initially, I doubt much was done in the beginning. No blood found to my knowledge.

Personally, after more review over the last two years, I don’t think the 2 suspects from Greenville were involved. If they “disappeared” Shaylene because she told people she thought they were involved in an alleged “$uicide” of an informant, why didn’t the others in her circle also end up missing? And why hasn’t anyone come forward with a tip while the suspects were incarcerated and couldn’t harm them?

Doesn’t make sense to me. I pray she is found and justice is served. She deserves to be buried respectfully, regardless of what happened.
