FULTON COUNTY, Ohio — A Fulton County judge has dismissed the latest attempt by James Worley to overturn his conviction and death sentence for the 2016 murder of Sierah Joughin.

The ruling, issued last week, dismisses Worley’s third amended petition for post-conviction relief.

Worley, now 66, sought to overturn his conviction by claiming his original trial lawyers failed to properly contest DNA evidence. His legal team argued that more advanced testing methods available at the time could have identified a different suspect.

The court ultimately sided with the State of Ohio, which had moved to dismiss the petition last August. Prosecutors maintained that Worley’s arguments regarding DNA testing had either been addressed in previous appeals or should have been raised years ago.

I have in my notes that his execution was postponed & won't be any until July 2026. Any word on this? I can not access Fulton County court site - case #16CR000106 - if anyone can access it?

According to this article, no date has been set yet -- but executions have been paused in Ohio since 2018 so he's probably not going anywhere soon.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - An appeal for the convicted killer of Sierah Joughin has been rejected by a visiting judge in Fulton County.

James Worley filed the appeal in 2025, raising several issues regarding his lawyer and what he called ineffective counsel.

Worley’s appeal lawyer cited issues in handling things like tire prints and fingerprints, along with not fully consulting with a DNA expert.

Joughin was kidnapped off her bike in 2016 and later found buried in a farm field.


Worley was convicted of her murder and sentenced to the death penalty.

The visiting judge denied all of the appeal motions and the conviction still stands.

No date for Worley’s execution has been set.
