OH - Suicide Of Pedophile The Good And Bad News

Is there any genuine story of a sex offender being rehabilitated?? I know you can never be truly sure, but are there even any mildly convincing stories??
to take your question seriously we would first need to look at what is a sex offender and why they offend. first we must exclude those labeled as a offender but are not actually sexually abnormal. as shadow stated a 18 year old with a 16 year old. a man caught taking a leak on the beach when drunk. once we remove those placed on the list for reasons other than sexual perversions we can deal with the actually people that are the problem. for years the medical community tried to change the sexual desires of gay men. they felt it was a sexual perversion and with therapy it could be fixed. it proved over time to be a total failure. they could no more change the desire of gay men than they could change the desire of straight men. we now know the factors that go into sexual desire form early in life even before puberty. men who are sexually attracted to children will always be attracted to children. it is part of their make up sexually. a basic part of it. their are men who harm children but are not actually sexually atracted to them. these men enjoy having power over their victims or causing pain. it will not matter to them if it is a child or adult. these men have shown some hope in the form of rehabilitation. in those cases we are not asked to change their basic sexual desire but to change the trigger that causes them to use sex as a expression of anger. as with a man that beats his wife he can get therapy to deal with his anger but he will always be at risk of returning to the behavior as a way of expressing his frustration. the best example of those that can be rehabilitated are prepubescent children. those that have acted on desire before they have finished developing their full sexual identity.

after reading your question i spent hours today reading up on the subject. my above opinion is based on this. having read about this subject all day not only do i feel i was right when i said the cure was death but i feel it even more strongly.

Do you know if JSO's are housed with all other Juvies or are they separated?
It depends. JSO programs can be of two flavors. An inpatient unit or outpatient (usually, day treatment). The latter tends to be the norm for large inner city populations. And these include everything from kids who may be residing in juvie to those on probation but are required to attend JSO day treatment. Inpatient JSOs however fall under psychiatric care as opposed to juvenile detention. The specialty facilities are the ones that only house JSOs. Larger facilities that provide general inpatient mental health care for kids, may also have a JSO program.

That being said, the biggest prob with JSO programs, that I can see, is that they primarily focus upon sexual aggression as opposed to say, working with the kids to teach them about boundaries and prosocial behavior. The other problem involves the issue of "labeling." I discuss these, along with other considerations as they pertain to juveniles at risk, generally, and JSOs, specifically, in my article, Lock-a-bye Baby.

It boggles my mind that public urination can land you on the SOR. My hubby has ducked in an alley between dumpsters a handful of times on our way home from somewhere and I can scarcely believe that had he ever been seen by a cop, he would be a registered sex offender. I don't like it when he does that, but I believe the most harsh punishment should be the one I dish out - refuse to hold his hand the rest of the way home.

There's a really good thread on this somehere here but I am too lazy to go find it! Shadowwraiths posted some great information.

The short answer, for me, is no - I don't think pedophiles can be cured because I think pedophelia is a sexual orientation and (with all due respect to Exodus:rolleyes: ) I don't think people get cured of their basic sexual orienation.

I believe situational sex offenders stand a much better chance of being rehabilitated to the point where they are not a danger to reoffend. If they change things about their life that helped lead them to the situations in the first place.

I have a friend - a 35 year old gay woman that had inappropriate sexual contact with a very young boy when she was way old enough to know better. To the best of my knowledge, she has never reoffended. So, she was a sex offender (situational - not a pedophile) who seems to have changed. I also know of a few others personally.
