OH - Teacher Burns Cross on Child's Arm

Is it me or have the teachers gone crazy this year. Kinda scary.

OMgosh, so he's lying that it's only an "X" and not a cross?

Obviously intelligent design passed him by at birth.

P.S. What would happen to me, as a mom, if my child went to school with something burned into his/her skin like this? Really, I would like to know.

If someone did that to my hypothetical child, my husband would be seeing me at his job. He's a corrections officer at the county jail.

Yeah, I'd put a beat down on that teacher's arse.

Okay, my questions are answered.

He's a dumb*$$.

What's frightening is the responses of the school administrations, the CYS and the police.

While I agree that many incidents are blown out of proportion, this does not seem like one of them.

A teacher fooling around drawing on a student with a electrostatic device is straight up grounds for dismissal, possible lawsuits, even criminal charges.

A teacher that mixes heavy doses of religion into his classroom is open for dismissal and lawsuits.

But to have a teacher be reprimanded for violating national laws on religion, then burn relgious symbols onto students arms, and do nothing, this fairly boggles the mind.

If it were my kid, and he or she gave their permission, I'd be pissed. If it was done against their will, I'd be soldering his rectum closed.

The incident report says he used a tesla coil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_coil

And of course, as I read further down, the item bnhall posted above is the device! lol

I can truly understand children wondering what that device does, in a way. But I would have done it to myself before making a mark on any of those kids. And it would just be one little dot, not an x or a cross!! Then again, I would probably just explain what it does and leave it at that. Makes me want to homeschool.

"One of the complaints was that Freshwater used an electrostatic device to burn crosses onto students’ arms."

"There are also allegations that Freshwater has conducted prayers and engaged in a healing session in his capacity as as monitor for a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting. According to Short, the FCA is a non-school sponsored religious club and federal law prohibits school employees from actively participating. Middle school principal Bill White has been directed to remove Freshwater as a monitor to the club."

What does "electrostatic device" mean, exactly?

BD-10A High Frequency Generator is about the same size and shape as a handheld power screwdriver, its tip puts out up to 50,000 volts of electricity.

This generator is made to ionize contained gases to make them identifiable colors (fluorescence), among other experiments when they are discussing changes to ions and thermal actuation. Usually discussions of Tesla Coils are involved, as this is based on the tesla coil.

A tesla coil takes 120vAC and bumps it way up. The resulting charge is very high voltage in the form of electrical arcs.

A hands on Science museum sometimes has these and the van der graff generator on show. The Van der Graff is the static electricity machine that you touch and your hair stands on end.

There is a tag with a warning stating for humans to not come into contact with the high voltage output.

Now it puts out low amps, which do not burn like high amp burns. It does however cause deep tissue damage, depending on how long you had contact with it. It gets more painful as time goes until it heals. That process can take a while, up to a couple of months, again depending on how long he was in contact with it.

It was wrong no matter if the child asked for it or not. A teacher knows better than to allow tools that can cause harm to touch a student or himself.

edited to add info about the van der graff generator

Whoops, I didn't see the links lol

At any rate, they are always used with caution. Or should be.

This wasn't an electrostatic device.

A Van der Graff generator is a type of electrostatic device. It outputs static electricity. It leaves no marks at all, does not cause tissue damage.

A Tesla Coil device is a dynamic device, it outputs high voltage rf currents. It does not leave immediate marks but they eventually show up as it does cause tissue damage. * based on how long you were in contact with it...could be minor...a couple of seconds...could be worse..drawing a cross perhaps?

The tool the teacher used was based on the Tesla Coil.

These are middle shcool kids, whether the kid consented or not is irrelevant. The adult (I use the term losely)had no right to do that to a child.

Right bakerprune!
Middle school kids are between the ages of 11-14. This creep had no right to burn a cross on his students.

If my child was in that school, I would press charges against the teacher.:furious:

Those of you who have seen me post are probably aware that I try to look at both sides of a story and see what the other side of the story is. I have to say, this teacher crossed the line so far that there isn't another side of the story that matters. I think criminal files should be charged.

Wow. Second one today. I'm going to have to start keeping score.

And a second job! This could be expensive at the rate you are going!

Freshwater to be fired:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/20/teacher.cross/?iref=mpstoryview
The Mount Vernon School Board passed a resolution to terminate the employment of John Freshwater, an eighth-grade science teacher for the past 21 years. (more at link)

Of course he has a lawyer and will be contesting the process.

He's been teaching for years. Took a new principal and a new supervisor to finally do something. The others must have been either fine with mixing some religion in with the education, or unwilling to do anything about it.

Speaking as a Christian myself when I read about idiots like this im reminded of the saying "It's really not fair to judge Christianty by Christians." Jesus Wept...
