Judge starting proceedings, giving court information, introduction of the state reps, attorney reps.

The family is aunt and grand parents. No parents present / reported.

TJ gives his birthdate, speaking softly.

It's a detention hearing. Required after a juvi has been placed in detention.

The judge was talking about detention of a minor.

Now prosecutor is asking for no further discussion with the media. TL attorney agrees. Judge notes that there is public interest due to the serious matter. Asks media to be careful with the accuracy of facts.

The court says the court and the attorney are no longer to discuss case with media. With two exceptions. Prosecutor has a scheduled public hearing. Attorney may file to dispute media reports ?

Media will participate in proceedings.

Victim / witnesses can elect NOT to be filmed.

Family members of TL do not want facial photos of the family. Including TL.

Upon learning that TJL had transferred to a school for "at risk" students tells me that this young man had some serious issues that probably stem from an unstable home environment and poor social relations with his peers. I'm sure that we'll be hearing more about this in the days to come and will get a better picture of who TJ is and what made him tick.

I agree that many, if not most, criminals have some type of mental health problems, but if all criminals were able to use a "mental health" defense, no one would ever be held accountable for their actions. jmo

It sounds like a continuation school. I went to one. I just want to state that "at risk" in such context does not mean at risk of being violent, or anything. It generally means at risk of failing or not graduating.

I, too, agree that many criminals have a mental health issue. Maybe even evil can be classified as a mental problem. But, all criminals can't use a mental health defense. In fact, few criminals ever can, at least successfully. Even if they are drooling and gibbering on the floor underneath counsel table in court (which I have seen). Not guilty by reason of insanity is very, very rare and very, very hard to get. It's different from having mental issued or a diagnosed mental problem. If the perp knew that what they were doing was wrong/illegal and/or they knew what they were doing (for example, if they knew, when they strangled someone, that they were strangling the person rather than squeezing a lemon) then it doesn't matter how crazy they are. They can and will beheld accountable.

Photo of TJ from yearbook (I assume) and photo of his arrest show a very different person. On arrest he looked very gaunt with very dark circles under his eyes. Hmmm?

Any links to arrest photo and/or yearbook photo? I've seen neither.

I agree with you here. Bullying used to be settled with fists when I was in school. Why do kids nowadays choose guns?

Funny, a little 10 year old girl out her in California died yesterday after getting in a fistfight with another, little girl. It lasted about a minute and she died from blunt force trauma! Who would have thought?

TL had a 22 handgun and was shooting in the school, officers located injured.
Male student in room 200 shot in the neck area.
Became apparent TL had left the building.
He ran out the door and into a wooded area and was located, taken into custody.

In custody he was advised of his rights. TL confessed firing 10 rounds in the cafeteria. Stated he chose the victims randomly, did not know them.
