Huh. I don't remember reading about the purple satin lining of the poncho before. They really stressed that it was handmade, too. Interesting.

I remember that people made their clothes back then, more so than now, so I don't think it was uncommon, but maybe making this particular buckskin poncho was more uncommon than sewing a jacket, or another article of clothing that was handmade like a top, dress, skirt, pants, etc.

Man, it is nice to see Carl getting a little love from Namus and LE. You do a lot for these cases and this forum man, and everyone appreciates it a lot. I also think the reconstruction they call "Amateur" is better than half the official ones I see. I'm sure you guys would agree.

Back to "Buckskin Girl" What blows my mind is how distinct that nose is. I am so surprised that it does not just jump out at someone who would remember this girl. With that real profound lean it has on her face it is just such a different feature. I really think it is just a matter of getting a picture around to more people of this girl. She has such a distinct look, I am convinced someone will recognize her.

There is a 30-pound weight range given for Merryl; maybe her family was unsure how much weight she'd lost since giving birth. A 25-to-35-pound weight gain is average for pregnancy. Per NamUs, her photo was taken in 1979 and I assume that's her infant son cropped out of the photo, so she may well have lost weight since that photo and continued to lose weight if she was on the road for six months.

Merryl is wearing an elongated ring in her photo that could well be turquoise Native American jewelry, though it could also be a mood ring or something unrelated.

She looks Jewish to me.

Anyone up for contacting this lady? I kicked this idea around for some time.

http://www.buckskinclothier.com/

She's from Ohio, but don't get excited about that because she didn't start making buckskin items until she moved out West. Still, she has a degree in fashion and has been doing buckskin for years, so I wondered if she would be able to shed any light on the jacket (if the techniques used or style reminded her of a particular maker or area, etc., the level of craftsmanship of the maker, etc.)

There's a photo of Merryl here. I was wondering if it could be her? Merryl could have lost weight from the time period of November 1980 to April 1981.

I noticed too that Merryl seems to a hair tie/band around her wrist, which to me suggests she put her hair into a pony tail. Also Merryl's hair appears to be on the thick side, which matches the thick/ almost rope like looking braids in my opinion.

In the missingpersons report her son was just a infant when she left.... he now would be over 30 years of age.

I don't see a resemblance between Merryl and BG. I also thought I read that BG had not given birth, right?

Hi all -

133UFOH/Buckskin Girl has been my "pet case" for a long, long time - I used to be a member of the DoeNetwork and was the Ohio area director for about a year (but I went back to school, moved a couple times, got married, bought a house, had a baby, so all of those things kept me from volunteering as much as is required). I've always called her "June" for some reason - that just seems like a name that fits her.

I haven't read every single post here word for word, so this may be redundant. But during my time as Ohio AD, I learned the following things about her case from Det. Steve Lord:

-Her "freckled, ruddy complexion" may have actually been petechiae, or tiny broken blood vessels, as a result of blood settling (as she was found face down, which could also account for her crooked nose).

-Her braided hairstyle had been undone during the autopsy (somewhat visible in the side post-mortem photograph) and rebraided later, so it may not be exactly how she wore it in life.

-Her face looks fuller in the frontal post-mortem photo because her head was propped up on a block to get a better angle for the picture.

Other than that, I just wanted to let everyone know that I submitted Nancy Kirkpatrick (http://doenetwork.org/cases/2452dfmt.html) for review to the DoeNetwork, although I'm having second thoughts after seeing the profile PM photo for the first time since 2006-ish.

Oh, and Det. Lord and I had discussed the possibility of Buckskin Girl being someone who had recently "aged out" of the foster system and therefore had no real contact with family members.

I had a very weird dream the other night where Buckskin Girl appeared to me and told me she left town with a rodeo rider she had a crush on but he got tired of her and left her at a truck stop and she was trying to get home but got a ride with a trucker who killed her and dumped her and her name was Barbara Cotton but they made a mistake when they ruled her out.

I do not usually have dreams like this. Weirded me out. Probably means I've been spending too much time on Doenet and Charley...

Maybe something to it, or similar name.
Sometimes one can get bleary-eyed and foggy- headed looking through the "Does" in hopes of finding a match not unlike a very complicated game of "Concentration".
Very frustrating when you think you found someone and then not remember where on earth you think you saw the match!
The beauty of dreaming imo. is that sometimes the sleeping brain seems to put things together, or at least makes an attempt to find the connections missed in waking hours. imo.

Barbara Cotton is on the ruleouts list, too. Missing from Dickinson, SD, which is certainly a place one might elope with a cowboy from.

I must have read that before...it sounds familiar.

And yes, you have nailed it! It's exactly like a complicated game of Concentration!

The traveling rodeo circuit, whether amateur or professional, would be something to look into.

I wonder if there were any traveling rodeo shows anywhere East of the Mississippi River during April 1981.

I think it's fair to assume that she was from a Western state (west of the Mississippi River) based on the style of her jacket, but if she was a travelin' gal, she could have just liked it and picked it up somewhere along the way. (Just saying not to get too caught up in finding someone who was from out West or interested in rodeos. I used to wear skater pants/shoes/etc and had absolutely no idea how to skateboard/snowboard. Oh, early 20's. :innocent:)

Welcome to Ws. dogmaticsusie!
Wondering if the jacket might have been bought at a road stand flea market, a vintage boutique, or a church sale, all fun places to find interesting inexpensive clothes all fab. in our early twenties!
This Doe looks too interesting to be forgotten by anyone imo.hope she is given her name back soon.
