Oklahoma's largest quake buckles highway; 1 injured

(CNN) -- Crews in central Oklahoma were out early Sunday morning assessing for damage from the largest quake to hit the state since record-keeping began.

The 5.6-magnitude quake struck 4 miles east of Sparks in Lincoln County at 11:53 p.m. ET Saturday.

"They're reporting that all the houses look like they've been ransacked," Bennett said of the assessment crews.

It was felt here in KC. Definitely not a normal occurrence for us, so they have been talking about it A LOT on the news this morning. One station even had a banner at the bottom of the screen running overnight asking people who felt it to send in their thoughts. I was asleep!! Very rarely do I go to sleep that early and I am actually really disappointed. I have always wanted to feel an earthquake....I know, most people think I'm weird, haha.

I hope everyone is okay! You know we're used to these quakes out in California, but I bet you folks are not! Now is probably a good idea to make a family plan -- since many earthquakes happen when loved ones are not all together. And to also think about earthquake preparedness.

Take a look around your house and see if you have any wall hangings that could topple over. In California we bolt everything down :)

Go to your local dollar store and stock up on batteries, flashlights, bottled water and other necesseties. Have plenty of medicine's and pet food on hand.

Ya know, all those wonderful things you normally wouldn't have to think about :(

Stay safe ya'll.

Mel

hahahaha.....in this part of the country that is called a tornado/ ice storm kit......already have them! NOW we just have a new use for them!

I just gotta say, if fracking is what's causing these quakes in unusual places, then we are in some big freaking trouble because they have fracked the frick out of East Texas!

Thank you for that highly technical and scientific assessment of the situation. :floorlaugh::floorlaugh: (And yet...so very true!)

Email from a friend in Edmond who'd just returned yesterday from Colorado and wound up near the center of action:

Am back in OK. Was actually in Shawnee at a private screening of an independent film some of our friends made and was damn close to epicenter. Theater shook side to side. I felt like the apocalypse was upon us.

5.6 is getting big enough to get concerned about, but I understand the aftershocks are smaller, so it's going in the right direction. I sure hope these aren't due to man's actions, and also hope they don't get any larger. Seems the lay of the land allows the impact to stretch far and wide.

Hang in there!

Okies react to the 5.6-er:

In Muskogee, retired advertising executive Robert Rhea, 70, said he felt his home rocking for about 15 to 20 seconds.

'Oh man, it just about shook this old man out of his TV chair,' said Mr Rhea.

Lincoln County reported portions of U.S. 62 have buckled and the chimney on a two-story house collapsed near Prague. A boulder also rolled onto a roadway in the area.

"It was a pretty ornery little earthquake," said Joey Wakefield, Lincoln County's emergency manager.

This one's made the rounds; a friend sent it to me after San Antonio had a 4.7 not long ago. Works in OK too:

It is unusual to see earthquakes in Oklahoma. It is strong for that area.

Up to 13 more small shocks since last night.....all in the 3.0 to 4.0 range

Well at some point one of the shocks made my Pomeranian wet his britches (well...I don't make him wear britches...but you get my drift). The only other time in his 10 years he's wet the floor is when he had urethra stones!!!

An initial damage check finds my bedroom door off kilter and a small crack in the plaster beside the front door (beneath a huge cobweb, I note). Haven't checked any further...can't risk finding anymore pesky cobwebs to be dealt with!!!

As of now.....its right at 24 hours past the 5.6 quake and there have been 17 aftershocks still in the 3.0 to 4.0 range.....last two happened just over 3 hours ago.
