“Five children and a man were killed and a woman was seriously injured after they were shot at a home in Muskogee, Okla., early Tuesday morning, the police said.

Officers arrested a man at the scene. The police said they believe that the victims were a family and that the shootings were not random, but did not suggest a motive or identify the person taken into custody.”

Investigators say one man and four small children were found dead in the home. A fifth child later died after being life-flighted to a Tulsa hospital.

Officials say one woman also was rushed to a Tulsa hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Family members tell KFOR that Brittany Anderson’s five young children were all shot and killed this morning. The children include 9-year-old Quedynce, 6-year-old Navaeh, 5-year-old Harmony, 3-year-old Jaidus, and 2-year-old Jalaiya.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Jarron Deajon Pridgeon, a 25-year-old man who lived in the home. Hamlin said officials don’t know a motive but do not believe any other suspects are involved.


Pridgeon “has chosen not to cooperate with the investigation at this time,” Hamlin said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Officers also encountered Jarron Deajon Pridgeon with a gun and took him into custody.

Hamlin said the suspect and victims all lived in the home, but that the exact nature of their relationships had not been determined.

“It was not random obviously because they all did live in this home together, but as far as what all those relationships look like, we just don't know that yet," Hamlin said.

She said Pridgeon was not cooperating with investigators.

Jail records do not list an attorney who could speak on Pridgeon's behalf.

Muskogee is a city of just under 40,000 people about 45 miles (70 kilometers) southeast of Tulsa.

The family says Brittany’s boyfriend opened fire on them early Tuesday. Again, shooting and killing the 5 children, shooting and wounding Brittany, and also shooting and killing another man in the home. The suspect is the father of some of the children.
The family said 3 other children in the house were unharmed.

Muskogee Public Schools released a statement Tuesday morning confirming some of the children shot were students at Creek Elementary.


We regret to inform our Muskogee Public Schools community that two members of our student family at Creek Elementary passed away overnight. Another Creek student was injured in the overnight incident. Muskogee Public Schools was first made aware of the situation early this morning and immediately made arrangements for additional counseling services at Creek Elementary. Our Crisis Team is working with Green Country Behavioral Health to provide grief counseling which will continue throughout the remainder of this week. We encourage any of those students or staff members directly impacted by this incident to seek these services. “We are saddened by this tragic loss and our deepest sympathies go out to all of those impacted,” said Dr. Jarod Mendenhall, Superintendent of Muskogee Public Schools. “No words can adequately express our sadness in losing these students and our thoughts and prayers are with this family.” We will make every effort to help our students and staff through this difficult time. The district will be notifying Creek Elementary parents to inform them of the situation and brief them on the support system that has been developed for the students.

The victim may not have lived in the area for a long time, according to neighbors in the area, but many of them were able to take note of the large family that recently moved in and the young children who used to live nearby.

Police say the man killed was 24-year-old Javarion Lee, the brother of the suspected shooter.

We used to go through Muskogee on the way to my grandma’s when I was a kid. We must have went there 50+ times. I always liked to go down Main Street and see the little country stores.

UPDATE: 12 PM: The suspect is Jarron Deajon Pridgeon, 25, according to law enforcement sources. He was convicted of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threatening to perform an act of violence and malicious injury to property in 2019 and received a three-year deferred sentence.

Muskogee Police spokeswoman Lynn Hamlin said this is a shock and “great deal of sadness” for the Muskogee community.

She said in the 16 years she has been with Muskogee Police, she has never seen anything like this.

“Today’s tragedy struck our community the likes of which we have not seen in decades,” Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman said in a statement. “Many of us went to bed resting in anticipation of tomorrow's hopes, only to have awakened to know that five babies with unlimited potential are no longer with us; their lives taken prematurely, their families grappling with a new horror, and our community paralyzed with grief.”

The suspect in a mass shooting had been evaluated for mental illness after being charged with assault in 2019, court records show.

Pridgeon was charged with assault and battery after he threw a large piece of cement at a woman on Feb. 3, 2019. He later was put on probation for three years for the offense after pleading guilty.

A judge in June 2019 ordered an evaluation by a state mental health expert to determine if Pridgeon "suffers from a mental illness." A report on the evaluation is filed in the case under seal from the public.

Online court records show that the suspected gunman was arrested in 2017 for larceny of an automobile. In February 2019, he was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threatening to perform acts of violence, and misdemeanor malicious injury to private property. In June 2019, he was charged with obstruction, resisting an officer, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
