GUILTY OK - Austin Haley, 5, killed by cop shooting at snake, Noble, 3 Aug 2007

I can't even imagine what the parents and grandfather are feeling right now. This is a terrible, terrible tragedy. I truly feel the officer did not follow procedures. What an idiot! Any information if the snake was poisonous? I think animal control should have been called. After all a snake in a tree is no harm to anyone. I hate snakes, but this animal should have just been removed and taken to a safe place.

DS, what on earth is a midget snake? Is this the correct terminology or just what you and/or others nicknamed them?
Dear sweet White rain,:blowkiss:
They are only about 4 inches long as an adult. Alot smaller than the Pygmy rattlesnakes in other states. They are called midget snakes

Wow, I guess you really do learn something everyday. Thanks!!!! Gonna go check them out now.

I am busy packing LOL
so I do not have time to read this entire thread ...
BUT snakes DO not stalk humans .... sooo if this snake was in a tree??
Why kill it..
Please note .. I have a SERIOUS snake phobia...But in trying to be married to this park manager I have learned they dot "attacK" unless they are rattlers cornered by stupid people.
Snakes do not seek humans as prey ...My skin crawls at the notion of a snake ... I even have nightmares if I see one...But I will fear nothing and I learned ... Snakes fear us ...
So why shoot one??

Dear sweet White Rain,:blowkiss:
Here is a very good site, not only for snakes, but spiders and scorpions as well. Many Pygmy snakes listed. This is a list of every state in the U.S.

midget faded rattlesnake There is a photo of it under the map. All of the info on each thing on the site is under the maps.

I just now learned that there really are rattlesnakes in Vermont!
I had no clue before I looked at the site.

I wonder what happened to the snake in the end.

We always got rid of poisonious snakes in our yards due to our children playing the next day. Snakes like to crawl in trees, on fences, gates, etc. but it isn't only the garden snakes which do. The snakes will often pose a threat to your kids the next day. Another thing we do not want to worry about...akin to the human snakes we have to deal with. So I can see the officer wanting to rid the people who called of the problem..however...you have not heard me say I believe he was OK in using deadly force with a gun. I believe he was totally in the wrong! He cost a young and beautiful life. I am saying...maybe the punishment in the end should meet the "crime" as it were tho. It was truly an accidental shooting, but he is an officer who should know better...his punishment should go accordingly.

Australian snakes are much deadlier than Oklahoman snakes. Yet somehow the Aussies cope without shooting guns off like drunken cowboys.

I grew up in South Florida with snakes as well as gators in the backyard. Yes, caution is required, but jeeze, Louise!

In most shootings by police, I'm inclined to give the officer the benefit of the doubt. We ask them to do dangerous work and make split-second decisions.

But this officer should have known better and he didn't have to shoot without thinking. He ought to be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Hi Nova.....maybe this cop needs to go back to gun school as he missed the snake twice......I wonder how far away from it he was.
I could have done a better job with a shovel.

Why was he using a gun to kill a snake, and not a hoe?! Unless you are on a farm, and all residents and pets are accounted for using a firearm to kill a snake is a bad idea. Even then, I wouldn't use a pistol to kill it. (Of course, I'd also only kill rattlers, copperheads, or cotton mouths, not ratsnakes and the like.)

My grandmother got along with snakes just fine, and all she had was a hoe. You really don't need anything else for even the poisonous snakes around here.

What a terrible tragedy for the little boy's family. I can't imagine anything sadder or more traumatic--

No, this cop should have his gun taken away for goot. Not only is he a bad shot, he's a macho jerk with impossibly bad judgment.

(ETA: and a very, very small penis, no doubt.)

Is THAT why he doesn't like snakes?

Dear Texana,:blowkiss:

I remember watching my grandmother lop the head off from a snake in the backyard with one whack. All that she had with her was her ho.
