Prosecutors will seek death penalty for Oklahoma City father charged with killing 7-month-old son

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty as punishment for an Oklahoma City father accused of killing his 7-month-old son and leaving the body in a trash can.

Victor Manuel Minjarez told police he "bagged up" his son after watching the baby take his last breath, an Oklahoma City police inspector testified Wednesday during a preliminary hearing.

An Oklahoma father accused of killing his infant son is expected to enter a plea in the case next week.

Victor Minjarez is charged with first-degree murder, desecrating a human corpse and second-degree burglary.

Minjarez was arrested in March of 2018 for the death of his 7-month-old, Jody. The baby was found inside a trashcan outside of a Venice Boulevard home after an Amber Alert was issued by the Norman Police Department.

According to online court records, Minjarez is expected to be in court Wednesday afternoon to enter a new plea and sentencing.

Jody’s mother testified in court at a preliminary hearing and said the last time she saw Jody was February 19, 2018. Minjarez was watching Jody at a home in Norman while she was at work. When she came home, she told the court he was “explosive” and angry before he violently beat her and took off with Jody.

“I didn’t want [Minjarez] to take him, but I physically could not get up,” she testified in court.

A Norman father pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Wednesday in an Oklahoma County courtroom.

The judge sentenced Victor Minjarez, 32, to life in prison without parole for killing his seven-month-old son and two life sentences for desecrating a corpse and burglary.

Minjarez waived his right to appeal the sentences as part of the plea deal with prosecutors.

“No doubt it was a horrible crime and he will receive a very, very severe punishment,” said Gayland Geiger, Oklahoma County District Attorney. “He will never get out again.”
