College is sometimes a shock for the new student. Everything's "new", money might be tight, you're on your own for most of everything and the coursework can be a LOT more challenging than anything you found in high school. I hope it was jut a bit much and he went away to regroup but was too embarrassed to call his Mom. It happens. I hope that's all it is, she's so worried.
