This is right down the road from me. This is my high school, the original. Our poor little town has experienced so much loss and tragedy. I could hear all the ambulances and fire trucks. I viewed all the chopper video in real life. I’m upset. It showed their belongings scattered across the roads and grass with the police walking around.some things covered up. It was so eerie. Looking down I almost felt like I was there with them. This is gonna tear our city up.

How horrific! What is wrong with people these days...to mow over and kill innocent children. Heartbreaking.

Moore student killed, five injured after being struck by truck

The man hit one car before hitting the students, then ran into two more vehicles and left the scene after striking students.

Lewis said police found the man four to five blocks from the scene with students' help. Students also called 911 after the incident, Lewis said.

"A lot of students witnessed the actual crash and were on scene when we arrived, some of those actually pointing out the direction the vehicle continued on, which helped us locate the vehicle," Lewis said.

"News 9 has learned that Max Townsend is the father of Cody Townsend, who police said was killed in a crash Sunday, February 2 near Buck Thomas Park. "

According to the article, the arrested driver's son was killed in a hit and run accident just the day before. How bizarre and tragic in so very many ways.

Today we mourn the loss of Rachel Freeman, a senior at Moore High. Rachel ran with the MHS cross country team. The past 3 years she crossed the finish line of our race as an elite runner. She finished as the first overall woman in 2017 & as the third overall woman in 2018 & 2019.

Police and school officials say that a pickup driver struck several cross country athletes near an Oklahoma high school Monday afternoon, killing one and seriously injuring three others.

Max Leroy Townsend, 57, allegedly mowed down six cross country runners near an Oklahoma high school, killing one. (Moore Police Dept.)

Police said the suspect, 57-year-old Max Leroy Townsend, hit six students in the 300 block of North Eastern near Moore High School.

One female student, Rachel Freeman, was killed, and three of the students are in critical condition Monday. Officials identified the other victims as Yuridia Martinez, Joseph White, Kolby Crum, Shiloh Hutchison, and Ashton Baza.

The victims were taken to OU Med where they are currently being treated in the trauma bay.

"It appears (the suspect) struck vehicles before and after striking the students," Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said Monday. "We are waiting on a warrant to draw his blood, which is typical with someone involved in a fatality crash but they are investigating the possibility of him being intoxicated."

Police officials told KFOR that Townsend's son, Cody, was killed over the weekend in a car wreck just a mile away from the scene.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister sent the following statement:

”The families, students and staff of Moore High School are enduring heart-wrenching tragedy this evening. The trauma team of the Oklahoma State Department of Education will be on site beginning Tuesday to help students through this terrible incident.
Tonight we pray for the Moore community and stand ready to assist in any way we can.”

Moore High School Principal, Mike Coyle sent the following email to parents:

"It is with great sadness and heavy heart that I share with you, there was a tragic accident this afternoon at Moore High School. Six of our cross-country students were running on the sidewalk and were struck by a vehicle.
One of our students, Senior- Rachel Freeman, passed away. Our other five students that were injured are receiving medical attention: Yuridia Martinez, Joseph White, Kolby Crum, Shiloh Hutchison, and Ashton Baza.
Please keep the students, staff, and our families in your thoughts. Our sympathies are with the Freeman family during this time.
All students will be informed of the accident and of Rachel's passing by their first hour teacher tomorrow. MHS School Counselors and MPS Mental Health Therapists will be available and ready to assist students as they express their feelings and grieve. We believe this online grievance support may offer support for parents and guardians as they console and help their children through this tragedy. Please contact the school office if you have questions of concerns, and if you feel your child needs assistance. We want to help."

So many of my high school friends died on that same street in 1973. The wrecked cars of the people who died and caused the wreck were parked right in front of our front entrance for display. As a lesson for all of us. My girlfriend was driving out of the parking lot like everyone else getting out of school to hurry up to cruise the main drag to get to the A&W first. She was looking down and trying to put an 8 track in to jam out. She went across the lane just minutes afterward the school bell rang. She was killed and hit cars causing multiple accidents.

Her boyfriend took me to her funeral. You can imagine young people that age so unaware of life and death. So sad.

“There are indications that he possibly was intoxicated,” a Moore policeman said.

Police say 56-year old Max Townsend drove off, but was stopped by a witness who had chased him.

Townsend was arrested for manslaughter and five charges of leaving the scene of an accident.

Townsend’s adult son, Cody, died in a car accident on Sunday.

eta: My daughter talked to witnesses and they said his wife was in the car with him. Grief and alcohol. Bad mix! Witnesses said he hit some kids, then hit a house, then went back to hit more kids.
