OK - Nex Benedict, 16 year old student died after being beaten in school restroom, Owasso, Feb 8 2024

I think this is a delayed head trauma from Nex head being beat on. Can't fathom what Nex could take to suddenly collapse around others?

There's a saying attributed to the medical profession: when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras.

I'm not a medical professional, but my own common sense tells me that in this case the horses are that the head injury resulted in Nex's death in some way.

The zebras are epilepsy, suicide, and drug overdose. None of which, I may add, is there a shred of evidence for that we know of.

Respectfully snipped for focus.

I don't agree. Nex didn't appear the least bit despondent in the hospital video. I get the sense of Nex as a fighter.

To answer a different part of your post that I snipped out: I lived in the West Village for awhile. Lucky you!
I think Nex’s death was more likely a delayed result of the altercation the day before than suicide.

That said, there are not always outward signs of suicidality. And for teenagers especially, a lack of impulse control means that the decision to attempt to end one’s life can be made more quickly than you’d think.

Medically speaking, those wouldn't actually be zebras since all are possible, but the concept is spot on. When we talk about zebras, we usually talk about things that would be one-in-a-million. So in this case, suicide and drugs would be on the differential, meaning they're possible but not as likely as brain trauma.

The brain trauma would be at the top of the differential and under it would be seizures (epilepsy is an illness; anyone can have a seizure without having epilepsy. A lot of things can cause seizure). Under that would be things that can cause a seizure. It would be in order of relevance and possibility. So it would look like this

Differential:
1. Brain trauma
a. Seizure
* TBI or bleed from impact
* aneurysm
* Drugs or withdrawal
b. Brain bleed and hemorrhage
2. Suicide
3. Organ trauma, such as ruptured spleen or punctured lung
4. Reaction to meds
5. Drug overdose

The zebra would be something like a genetic disorder or some type of rare blood disorder he had that happened to kill him, IME.

Particularly in the face of public humiliation, which I believe would have resulted from this fight.

Owasso Police did, however, release multiple video and audio clips surrounding its investigation into Benedict's death Friday. It's just one of multiple decisions some legal experts are calling unusual.

"It's fairly extraordinary for the police to release an interview, especially of a juvenile," said Tulsa attorney Clark Brewster. "I found that to be quite odd. I've never seen it happen frankly."

In the body camera footage, when the police officer asked Nex if he ever reported the bullying to the school, Nex said, “I didn’t really see the point in it.”

Owasso students told NBC News that Nex’s answer is common among their classmates: LGBTQ students and others who face bullying due to their identities feel like when they report the bullying to the school, they either aren’t believed or nothing really changes.

From the article:

Lieutenant Nick Boatman, the Owasso police spokesman, later told the Popular Information newsletter that the medical examiner had not explicitly told him that Nex’s death was unrelated to the head injuries.
So the police issued a false statement?
Why would they do that???

Perhaps an overdose? On the 911 call the dispatcher specifically asked if Nex used drugs, vapes etc. Wondering what vapes could have done to cause their death if so?
Those are standard questions for first responders to ask.
I highly doubt vaping is why a beaten person died.

If the physical exam was done, wouldn't they release info on poisonous stomach contents if they existed? Was Nex's stomach pumped at the er? No reports of open containers of pills in their room? No narcan use by the medics? No suicide note found?

The dispatcher didn't ask Nex's mom if they were on any prescription drugs.
imo: Using drugs could have been understood by the mom as illegal drug use?
Some of the drugs kids are prescribed today can be deadly.

I have also heard of the pugilistic stance. That handsome man Paul Walker from those race car movies died in that pose when the apeeding sports car he and his friend were in crashed and burst into flames.
In Walker's case it was probably the thermal injuries that caused it. It's a known result of catastrophic burns resulting in death. In that case, it's due to the muscles and tendons tightening due to the heat, not neurological.

Yes I read that too. And endless immediate family discussions about it. Imagine 3 doctors and a nurse are at all your family dinners.

That night, Nex went to bed with a sore head and eventually fell asleep while listening to music, Ms Benedict said. On the afternoon of 8 February, Nex was getting ready to go to Tulsa with Ms Benedict for an appointment when they collapsed in the family living room.Feb 20, 2024

Oklahoma banned trans students from bathrooms. Now Nex ...

'Police have not yet shared the cause of Benedict's death, but said a preliminary medical examiner's report has ruled out trauma. Police have not gone as far as saying outright though that an altercation in an Owasso High School bathroom, Benedict admitted to being involved in the day before they died, didn't have something to do with it.

Owasso Police did, however, release multiple video and audio clips surrounding its investigation into Benedict's death Friday. It's just one of multiple decisions some legal experts are calling unusual.

"The big point of contention, however, surrounding the interview police released between one of its officers, Nex, and their mother; Brewster calling the line of questioning problematic.'

On Feb. 16, Oklahoma Watch reporter Jennifer Palmer submitted a public records request to the city of Owasso seeking access to all police reports related to the fight and Benedict’s death. The city denied the reporter’s request, citing the involvement of minors in the incident and the police department’s ongoing investigation.

Days after rejecting Palmer’s request, the Owasso Police Department released some records related to the incident, including a search warrant affidavit, surveillance camera footage from the school, and police body-worn camera video showing an officer’s interaction with Benedict’s family at the hospital.

In a letter sent to Owasso Police Department Captain Shaun Jones on Feb. 26, Reporters Committee Local Legal Initiative Attorney Denver Nicks commended the police department for taking an “important step” toward transparency. However, he wrote that the department’s denial of Palmer’s request for police reports does not comply with the Oklahoma Open Records Act.

The letter pointed out that the Owasso Police Department is required by law to turn over initial incident reports in response to a public records request regardless of the status of any ongoing investigation. Additionally, the letter stated, the law does not permit the police department to withhold all records simply because the incident involves juveniles. Instead, the police department is required under the Open Records Act to release responsive records with exempt information redacted

So they denied because a minor is involved but puplished the interview themselves?

Sounds that way to me.
Did the police release the interview, thinking it would prove they did a great job and eliminate public speculation, but it backfired when people saw the incident being downplayed by the school officer?

This is absolutely horrifying. Same as Matthew Shepard being murdered for being gay. This malignant hatred has to stop! It's heartbreaking and very depressing. The world is going dark.
