A former Oklahoma state senator who served as the county campaign coordinator for President Trump’s 2016 campaign has agreed to plead guilty to a child sex trafficking charge.

Republican Ralph Shortey resigned in March, days after he was charged with soliciting sex from a 17-year-old boy.

Shortey is slated to plead guilty on Nov. 30, two weeks ahead of his planned trial. Prosecutors will drop three counts of child against Shortey as part of the plea deal.

In exchange for the guilty plea, federal prosecutors agreed to drop three additional counts of child against Shortey, who has since resigned from his state senate seat.
The investigation of the March incident uncovered evidence that Shortey had been living a secret life, using fake news to solicit sex and exchanging with underage boys.

In February, Shortey introduced a bill that would cut funding to cities or counties that adopt sanctuary policies protecting undocumented immigrants. The legislation was put forth as a growing number of localities declared themselves sanctuary cities in response to Trump’s new immigration policies.

Upon introducing the bill, Shortey said the measure was needed because illegal immigration could lead to all sorts of bad things — like human trafficking.

Had Shortey gone to trial and lost, he would’ve been looking at a 30-year prison sentence at the very least, Blau said. The sex trafficking charge is punishable by at least 10 years in prison. Federal law requires defendants to serve at least 75 percent of their sentence. In Shortey’s case, that would be 8½ years, but a judge will ultimately decide on what his sentence would be.

A former state senator has pleaded guilty to child sex trafficking charges on Thursday.

His attorney, Ed Blau, told News 4 that Shortey would plead guilty to one count of child sex trafficking in exchange for his other counts of three child charges to be dropped.

The judge overseeing the case ruled that he will remain in custody until his sentencing, which will be determined at a later date.

However, the minimum punishment for the crime is 10 years in prison.

Shortey is expected to appear in Oklahoma City federal court this afternoon.

Regardless of the deal between Shortey and prosectors, he will be required to serve at least a 10-year prison term, the mandatory minimum time for child sex trafficking. The maximum time for the offense is life in prison.

Shortey is believed to have created email, Craigslist, Facebook and Kik accounts to send sex videos via his smartphone and to entice a male minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Moore Police Department investigated the case with assistance from the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Ex-Oklahoma state senator sentenced to 15 years on child sex trafficking charge

A former Republican state senator in Oklahoma was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison Monday on a child sex trafficking charge.

U.S. District Judge Timothy DeGiusti handed down the sentence to Ralph Shortey, 36, who faced sentences of between 10 years and life in prison. DeGiusti also ordered Shortey to serve 10 years of supervised probation once he is released from prison and said he will impose a fine on the former two-term lawmaker at a later date. The fine could be up to $250,000.
