I first met Sharon when she was placed into my English class in 10th grade. This was a "gifted" class, and we had all pretty much been together for several years. In all 3 years, she was the only new person added to that class.

Within a week, there were headshots being distributed across the school. An 8x10 black & white photo of a blonde girl, heavy on the makeup, with the name "SHARON MARSHALL" in capital letters across the bottom. Of course, guys went gaga, but the reality was that she looked very little like the picture. If she were trying to make friends, this was the wrong way to do it. All it did was get the "popular" girls to shut her out.

(In hindsight, I think that this was a ploy to establish her identity. I also think the photo of Suzanne and her "father" was done to establish "the family.")

As I recall from the book, the HS yearbook included a message of congratulations from FDF for her graduation and scholarship to GA Tech, with another glam photo of her.

I suspect that it was FDF, in his demented obsession with her, who was putting out all of the publicity to draw attention to her - as if to say: "This is my sexy little girl - Don't you wish she was yours?." And she had no choice but to go along with it.

It fits in with him making her get breast and buttocks implants, and do sexually explicit videos and work in strip clubs.

Those pictures were taken in the dead of August, 1985. You have to remember that is the hottest, muggiest time in Georgia. Sharon's hair looked a bit coarse--it reminds me of my daughter's hair. Not straight, a bit wirey, and absolutely uncontrollable in the humidity. Personally, I think she was having humidity problems with her hair. It's also fixed in a style I don't think I ever saw her with again. Sharon was one of the few girls that did not have a perm.

Continuing the story....

After the headshot debacle, Sharon retreated away from the clique. She mostly stuck to the smarter kids, those that were on the lower end of the popularity food chain. (for the record, I was smack dab in the middle) These were people who were not highly visable as school leaders. So when she decided to run for Student Council office, it was "Sharon Marshall? Who is that?" Her opponent, a middle of the road quiet guy, was sure to win, because he was well known and liked. In a BRILLIANT move, Sharon pasted her headshots on her campaign posters. And, just like that, Sharon became a Junior Class officer. I want to say it was Secretary. I can only remember who the Jr. president was, the VP, and treasurer, I don't remember. Unfortunately for Sharon, this did not improve her standing in the popularity race.

I went back to my Jr yearbook to see if there were any photos of her. I could only find the Jr. picture, and her picture with the Prom Committee. There is no class officer pictures (I know!) and she is not in the ROTC pictures.

This has to be the reason she went to the leadership conference--it was with the class officers and executive committee of the student council.

To be honest, I don't recall her having close female friends. They were all males. One them, I've seen called her boyfriend here--I don't think he was her boyfriend, because he only dated one girl that I ever knew of. But the fact that he was even friendly to her was a huge statement. This guy would just as soon kick your fanny as look at you. I remember being afraid of him in 7th grade because he was tremendously mean. As it turned out, he too, had a crappy homelife, but he was brilliant beyond most, and no patience for stupid people. He only befriended people he thought worthy to talk to, and I am proud that I was one of them.

Another of her male friends, would give her a ride home from school. He told stories of Sharon's father waving a gun at him, and threatening the guy with it.

She mostly stuck to herself other than that. She may have had some ROTC confidants, but since I wasn't in ROTC, I can't attest to that.

Oh, by the way, I haven't read the book. I've been told by several classmates that I should read it. I'm not sure I want to know too many details. It's not the same when you actually know the person that had to live the awful life.

I'm really only interested in giving her family peace.

Welcome to WS. We appreciate your joining to share your memories of Sharon. You mentioned you would be honest in sharing your memories even if they might be 'offensive' to some. As a moderator here and one of the mods assigned to the cold case forum, you have the right to share your thoughts here and I hope our honesty is as well received.

However, we want to make sure what is shared is 'case related'. ie. What can help to find Sharons name. In other words, every HS has the girl who was popular or unpopular, had a reputation or not. We would like to and ask you stick with sharing your memories that would help ID Sharon and might be different or stand out outside of the usual High School gossip/rumor mill.

Also, it is kind of 'standard' here that any info from family, friends or players in a case is considered 'rumor' vs. fact if the statements can not be backed up by media, LE or some verifiable source. I hope you understand.

I should also have news shortly on the DNA test. The sample was just shipped to the National Center.

I think putting her DNa into a national crime DNA base maybe would get a hit?
If it is true that FDF had gotten her from a woman on the streets as he says:
maybe her family was arrested at one time?
So the Dna would be in that data base.
actually her DNA should be put for a match in all data bases.
She has to be related to someone?
maybe that Geneaology international data base for DNA?
That one connects family members via DNA ....

I do not know who processes for NCMEC-if it is the Center for Human Identification in TX, her DNA will go into CODIS and they will process mTDNA and put it into a national FBI Database for mTDNA as well.

Geneaology databases are not very robust-but that being said, it cannot hurt to do so as well. That usually costs something, but they may be willing to waive it for a high profile case like this one.

Another option for Sharon has likely been discussed on the boards before, so forgive me if I am rehashing. I have been fascinated for years by this technology:

Granted, given the number of times Sharon allegedly moved, she may not be a great candidate....OR we may find out that she stayed within a certain region for the bulk of her lifetime.

I was holding out hope that her molars were not all in yet...adult teeth form under baby teeth right, so if her molars were still available....well I can dream

I think the difference is baby teeth form in utero so the isotopes are from the mother, not the child. I am pretty sure only the baby teeth form in utero. Any adult teeth would have the missing persons isotopes. So in order to know where Sharons mother was from, narrow a geographical area so to speak, it would have to be from teeth formed in utero.

At least that is based on what I have read regarding DuPage Johnny does case, because they used one of his baby teeth to narrow a geographic area from which is mother was from -while pregnant with him - but the isotopes from his bones indicated the area he grew up in the 5 years he was alive. I hope that makes sense. didn't mean to get OT, just used that as an example.

20 years ago, the life of the young woman we know as Sharon Marshall was taken.

Despite horrors most of us can scarce imagine, she never gave up hope.

To truly honor her memory, neither can we.

Spare a moment of your thoughts and prayers for this remarkable girl, and for what might have been.

Sharon....Though we never knew you, I hope you know how much we care for and admire you.
