OK OK - Stephen “Steve” Lee Murphy, last seen in Claremore sometime in 1976, not reported missing until July 2022 Thread #2

I have membership and could read all the data.
The death date says 1976.
But I have to dig a bit deeper to see more about the Ross family. The owner of the Tree is in Loveland CO.

Stephen's father had sooo many siblings. That often means that there are too many offspring to keep track of, and no one remembered missing kids of all their siblings!
But I have not found the specific Ross link.... I have pulled up the Ross folks in the tree, but no specific link to the Murphys... yet.

Snoangel probably knows this connection. She had an Ancestry entry for Stephen already....

(Not about this case. About Ancestry). Sometimes owners of some trees, if they are linked genetically to some person, would copy all their trees, wives, wives' families. Then we get huge trees where parts are not linked genetically, but by marriage. Might it be a similar case?

I'm not aware a a Ross link on my paternal side. I do have Stephen listed in my tress on ancestry, 23andme, and myhertiage.

@Snoangel26 I first heard of this story through a YouTube video by Dark Curiosities (I recommend this channel). It reminded me of you and your dad's case. I thought I would share an article about the story here; maybe it will be a morale boost.
I can't access YouTube at work but the video is titled "Winston Maxey: The Snedden Creek Mystery" and is one of her recent releases. There is also a thread here about the case.
Thank you this young man story. I'm very happy he got his name back and his daughter found him. I pray they find out what happened to him

Yes I saw that. I would like to dig on the Ross link I found, just in case. Then maybe it is another dead end but there are very few leads in this case, I wouldn’t eliminate any. Your story touched me and if I can help you in any way it will be 1000 times worth the time spent.

Some distant relative copied all my tree, even the parts that are of no relevance to them and not related. The only way I knew is was when Ancestry asked me to confirm some "hints". It is not always bad when it happens - this way I, too, have access to someone's huge database, if you think. But also: if some Murphy woman married a Ross guy, and Steve was in Murphy tree, then some Ross person can copy the whole Murphy tree, and vise versa. Merging the trees "by marriage" happens often. It was more common ten years ago, when people were "proud" of huge trees. As long as tree is open, it is OK. If the information about Steve in Ross tree is correct, it is possible to write the owner and ask how they are related.

First I will need to find it. I don't have a subscription

Please dig. I'm open to all the help I can get. Thank you

My grandparents were Tommy and Mary Jane. I have not seen the connection concerning Ross family
I use Ancestry extensively. Sometimes, when I see a case like this, I create a floating family in my research tree to see what I can find. I think that may be the only reason the Murphy family is in the “Ross” tree.

SnoAngel, do you know if Stephen went into the military to support his family, or to get away from the marriage? Had he and your mom split up before he enlisted?
They were together when he enlisted. He enlisted in April and they were married in June. I'm not sure what made he decide to enlist. I do know that in January 1975 before he was 18 he got into a little trouble with the law

On the "last seen in Claremore"...so he came back to Claremore after he went AWOL? Or was he last seen by family in Claremore in 1976, but by other service members after?
I did the missing report before I got other information. As far as I know November 1976 he was listed as AWOL by the military. My mother last had contact with him was May 1976, according to divorce papers. Idk when his mother last had contact with him. She is now deceased and never responded to me
