I wonder if he's in WITSEC?

Having him declared is a big step. It would likely make your search easier, but IF he is still alive and utilizing his own SSN and is just incredibly difficult to track down because he's an older person with a relatively common name, then you would potentially be cutting off his ability to file taxes, utilize Medicare, or possibly even to access his bank and credit accounts. Declaring someone deceased can severely impact a person's life and be very difficult to reverse, so please take that into consideration before proceeding.

That is the only reason I haven't declared him decease yet. I need to do everything else first. Try any means before I do that

I just went and got swabbed for my DNA to be referenced on Stephen. It will be added to CODIS and attached to his missing person report. I have also learned that the original detective I was corresponding with doesn't have the case any longer. It was transferred to someone else.

Great about the DNA.
Unfortunate that you didn't get told about the detective moving on.

The DNA testing is the best step forward, imo. While genetic genealogy sites like GEDmatch haven't been much help, the CODIS system will be a big one if he is a Doe with an existing profile.

Forgive me if this was already posted, haven't read the whole thread. Hope you're well. Is it possible he is this John Doe? He lines up quite well as a match.

I requested Stephen and this John Doe be looked at. But I haven't heard back about it. They do line up well.

I say provide your DNA. Are we certain he was alive in the 80s or could he have died in the 70s?

Best of luck. I think your best bet is dental records, do you know if he had any? And you should definitely enter into CODIS if you haven't already. Hope you can get answers.

I don't know if there are any dental records. They have his fingerprints on file. I had my DNA sent in for them to enter into CODIS. Just waiting for any news

If he was discharged from the service in 1984, he can't be this John Doe.

Good point. I didn't think that thru.
Have you seen the military records? Don’t rule anything out until you see proof. One small mistake by someone can make a huge difference in a case.
I’ve researched this to death and didn’t notice the date discrepancy until now either. So, that makes me question, if no one heard from him since 1976…how did grandma know he joined the military and went AWOL?
