Oprah

Used to love her and never missed her show. Once I matured I realized Oprah is a cancer on our society.

Gardenista, you are always so negative lately. I hope nothing has changed in your life, but I detect a change. Hope all is well with you, personally! Look on the positive side, luv. Even the scum of the earth have their purpose, If only to open our eyes to the crud that goes on.

I don’t know that I am for her, but why would she not be good at it? We need people with a compassionate heart who are willing to learn and to get alomg with others. No one can know everything in this complex world.

We need someone who can get along with world leaders as well as the problems are so,interrelated.

Respectfully, The President of our great country needs more qualifications than someone who can get along with others. I've never met her, but have seen her around for decades and, to me, she isn't qualified for the job. Not saying she isn't willing to learn...a qualified candidate has already learned.

Oprah's home suffers 'minor damage' from Southern California mudslides
Mudslides have claimed 15 lives

(CNN) - Two days after the Golden Globes and a speech that had everyone talking, Oprah Winfrey's thoughts are not on her presidential prospects but with her neighbors in Santa Barbara, California, where heavy rains have caused dangerous mudslides and led to fatalities...

Agree. The job of POTUS is one that's very unique and requires very specific skills and education. Whomever fills the job needs to know how Congress works, how bills are passed, how regulations work. They need to have a strong background and knowledge of economics, the federal budget, foreign policy & diplomacy, Constitutional law, etc. The federal budget and all the departments of the Executive Branch alone are a massive challenge:

Try reading through the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) web site just to get an idea of what skill set you need for the job:

https://www.cbo.gov/topics/budget

Any POTUS or member of Congress has to spend hours poring over this kind information every single day. To properly make decisions, you can't rely on "advisors" to do it for you.

Now spend some time visiting Congress.gov, the web site of Congress and the LOC. This is legislation that's moving every day through Congress and on to defeat or to the POTUS desk for signature. Competent presidents track this stuff hourly and know what's moving, what isn't, what's changing and what they want to see out of it - every day.

https://www.congress.gov/

Gotta know all the Committees too, where legislation goes to die or get passed along for a floor vote

http://clerk.house.gov/committee_info/index.aspx

https://www.senate.gov/committees/committees_home.htm

Check out the committee calendars and schedule for hearings

https://www.senate.gov/committees/committee_hearings.htm

(Actually, every US voter should spend a little time each week at Congress.gov to see what's going on, what your legislators are doing, what is in the text of bills they're trying to pass. Newspapers used to cover this stuff pretty well, but it's become a lost art.)

Here's a look at the Executive Branch, the part of federal government that POTUS is responsible for

https://www.usa.gov/executive-departments

Here are the sub-agencies of those departments. All of these agencies have budgets, regulations and programs they oversee and manage. They're all necessary for the healthy functions of our country and our everyday lives.

https://www.usa.gov/sub-agencies

Then there's all that stuff that's part of national security, the 4 branches of the military, foreign relations, law enforcement (FBI, CIA, NSA, Secret Service). Does anyone have a recent estimate on how many wars we're waging in foreign countries? I've kind of lost count. But, yeah, it's a lot of work. Any POTUS who is delegating all this work, decision-making, etc. to other people is not a good POTUS. Most can hide it pretty well, but it catches up. When it does, it's all of us who are hurt by it.

Talk of a presidential run could aid Oprah’s massive empire
by Claire Atkinson

Oprah Winfrey has a $2.8-billion business empire that extends from Kraft Heinz convenience foods to an upcoming Disney movie, a magazine, a cable channel and a contract as a CBS News special contributor, to name just a few of her brands and ventures.

All facets of Winfrey's world could get a boost if the chatter continues about a possible presidential run that grew out of her much-discussed speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday night...

Her experience and knowledge, involvement with world leaders and issues, etc goes well beyond what many might think...

There are thousands of photos of Weinstein with people. I don't know what they did and didn't know. We can all speculate but have no real idea in the end. Are all who met with, conducted business with, and worked for Weinstein responsible for shuffling victims into his clutches? I don't think so.

Pictures of them sucking on his ear? Or pictures of them presenting him with a victim?

Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't mean it isn't true.

She's a hypocrite and an enabler.

Totally agree. Hypocrite, enabler, and happy to allow herself and her persona to be used as "bait" for him.

All those pictures and stories will be used front and center, RELENTLESSLY, if she decides to run for elected office. It's all fair game at that point, and she will be exposed for what she's done. Those pictures, and her history with HW, are very, very bad for her as a potential candidate. She can be an advocate, but not a candidate, IMO.

If she runs for POTUS, her "savior" persona and reputation will definitely be tarnished. She could end up being destroyed as a respected businesswoman and actor.

Remember that if she runs for POTUS-- she has to be acceptable to the ENTIRE country, not just a bubble of her pals in Hollywood. That will be a hard sell, with her particular brand of politics, AND the ugly tarnish of her enabling HW.

Best she takes her lifetime achievement award, and her billions, and cheerleads for better and more electable candidates, IMO.

I also support her using her vast fortune to continue her charitable purposes, and I'm hopeful she'll do more of that here in the U.S. for underprivileged kids. She can be a very strong force for some good, but IMO, not as an elected official. I'd rather see her use her fortune to benefit her charitable objectives. That is far less controversial than her running for office, and allows her to keep her reputation intact (and thus more $$ rolling into her businesses).

I have friends that are black. They do not want her to run.

She has brains . No one can know everything,

Who of us can say that we have accomplished anything like she has coming from such tragic circumstances. And she has kept it. Many children inherit great wealth, lose their fortunes buying silly things and snorting it up their nose.

Kudos to her.

Oprah, like the greats outside of politics in their day; MLK, Mandella, Ghandi will have much more power because politics has constraints as every U.S. President has found out.

All the current administration is going on the defense... Who would aspire to that?

As to the misleading pictures of Oprah and Weinstein, he presented himself one way to certain people, important celebrities, and was a criminal to others. It is not Oprah's fault that he played her one way and treated others like dogs.

Let's not take a situation, a photo from years ago and slap collusion on Oprah. She would be horrified if she knew. Every show she ever did was victim friendly.

Some of the comments here, and on news feeds, and social media are proof of why she will not run. Why would she?

Kudos to Oprah for setting the world on fire, for making us think again, for making us dream again, and I believe there is something higher than "winning".

She gave that and then some in her beautiful speech...

I am not the biggest Oprah fan but to say that she was sucking on his ear is not true and grotesque. Presenting him with a victim is absolutely not true and grotesque. I believe you are out of line. I, more than anyone, detest abusers, rapists and victimizers of innocent people but to say what you are about Oprah is patently wrong. Weinstein raped, abused and coerced young women for his own perverted pleasure to paint anyone else with the brush without proof is just plain disgusting.

Agree, that charactization is so out of line, and wrong. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Oprah, she would never sign on to the perversion expressed here by some posters. And I am horrified by the "Page Six" references... Really?

It says a lot more about the grotesque posters than Oprah...IMO.

I can't help recalling Oprah's major faux paus when she chose an author for her famous "Book Club" who was eventually exposed as a fraud. Poor judgment or honest mistake?

Author Is Kicked Out of Oprah Winfrey's Book Club
EDWARD WYATTJAN. 27, 2006

In an extraordinary reversal of her defense of the author whose memoir she catapulted to the top of the best-seller lists, Oprah Winfrey rebuked James Frey, the author of "A Million Little Pieces," on her television show yesterday for lying about his past and portraying the book as a truthful account of his life.

"I feel duped," Ms. Winfrey told Mr. Frey. "But more importantly, I feel that you betrayed millions of readers."

She added: "I sat on this stage back in September and I asked you, you know, lots of questions, and what you conveyed to me and, I think, to millions of other people was that that was all true." ...

What does Oprah represent? Fake science, hucksters and greed

https://nypost.com/2018/01/08/no-oprah-havent-we-learned-our-lesson-with-celebrity-candidates/amp/

Winfrey also gave a platform to Jenny McCarthy, the former Playboy Playmate-turned-vocal anti-vaxxer. In her 2007 appearance, McCarthy claimed that her then-toddler son’s autism was caused by a measles, mumps and rubella vaccination — a wholly unproved and unscientific assertion, one Winfrey largely ceded to her guest.

Other Oprah-backed grifters include Dr. Phil, who has been accused of exploiting his vulnerable guests and abusing his workplace staff, all under the guise of being America’s folksy shrink; Dr. Oz, accused by colleagues at Columbia University of promoting “quack treatments” and called before the Senate to explain same; Suzanne Somers, a ’70s sitcom star-turned-bioidentical hormone huckster; and no shortage of New Age gurus, most notably Eckhart Tolle, who has made millions preaching the vague comforts of “The Power of Now.”

Winfrey’s materialism extends to her Leadership Academy for Girls, which she founded in South Africa over the government’s concerns that the facility was too lavish, too elite and neglectful of the country’s largely poor children. (Only 152 girls were admitted.) She spent $40 million building a school that includes a beauty salon, yoga studio, 200-thread-count sheets and expansive closets, even though the girls were so poor, they owned very few clothes.

Off topic.

It is terrible what has happened especially the loss of life. From what I have seen on television Santa Barbara is a beautiful part of the United States. I hope the area recovers ASAP.

Seal calls out Oprah Winfrey for hypocrisy, calls her 'part of the problem'

Internationally renowned musician Seal trashed Oprah Winfrey on social media just days after her widely praised speech at the Golden Globe Awards on sexual misconduct in Hollywood, calling her a “part of the problem for decades.”

In a fiery Instagram post Wednesday, Seal republished a pair of photos of Winfrey with disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, including one in which she appears to be kissing the producer’s cheek. Overlayed on the photos, in all-caps, is the text: “When you have been part of the problem for decades, but suddenly they all think you are the solution.”

Seal added a sarcastic comment to the right of the photographs that suggested Winfrey knew Weinstein was mistreating women.

“Oh I forgot, that's right.....you'd heard the rumours but you had no idea he was actually serially assaulting young stary-eyed actresses who in turn had no idea what they were getting into. My bad,” Seal wrote.

On Tuesday, comedian and “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane also spoke out against Winfrey, cautioning that celebrity power does not alone qualify a candidate for the presidency.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainmen...rey-for-hypocrisy-calls-her-part-problem.html

Juanita Brodderick, who has accused Pres Bill Clinton of raping her, also has called out Oprah for hypocrisy.

“Hey @Oprah #GoldenGlobes,” tweeted Broaddrick Monday. “Funny I’ve never heard you mention my name. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?Guess not. My rapist was/is your friend, Bill Clinton.”

Pictures captioned by Sean, and video commentary at link. It seems that others, beyond just a few posters here, also believe that Oprah is soaked in hypocrisy for her actions/ inactions, misuse of her power and celebrity, for decades.

But she's apparently "reflecting" on all that (her words on FB). Reflection is good-- and publicly admitting her "OWN" enabling would be better for healing, and less hypocritical. As I said, she needs to "OWN" her "OWN" part in all this, before she gets to lecture others from an award show stage, and paint herself as some kind of savior.

Rasmussen poll: Oprah leads Trump by 10 points

A new poll from conservative-leaning pollster Rasmussen finds Oprah Winfrey beating President Trump by 10 points in a hypothetical 2020 matchup.

Forty-eight percent of respondents said they would vote for Winfrey, compared with 38 percent who said they would vote to reelect Trump. Fourteen percent were undecided.

Among Democrats, 76 percent said they would support Winfrey, as would 22 percent of Republicans and 44 percent of independents.

The president gets the support of 66 percent of Republicans, 12 percent of Democrats and 38 percent of independents.
