"That's when Nexus, an 8 ½-year-old golden Labrador Retriever, started out on a trail with his handler, Scott Lee, of the K9 search and rescue team within Mountain Wave Emergency Communications.

Nexus and Lee had searched Tuesday in the park, starting at 3 p.m. Before long Nexus – trained to detect decomposing human remains -- was behaving as if he'd found something, Lee said. Those signs could be Nexus sniffing the air more than usual, wagging his tail vigorously or sitting -- the ultimate signal for which he's been trained to display if his search has ended.

But nightfall arrived, the search was suspended and Nexus was slated to return the next day. The dog made the discovery about 45 minutes after entering the forest Wednesday, Lee said.

"I saw him scenting the air and then I saw him move in the direction of our subjects," said Lee, who was accompanied by Mountain Wave assistant Victoria Armstrong.

Following the dog, Lee and Armstrong saw the bodies in a flat area and they stopped about 70 feet away. While they could see people walking on a nearby trail, Lee said the bodies couldn't be seen from the trail."

What a waste of life! Reading what Annieka's dad said about how she was getting ready for homecoming I have to wonder if she was a willing victim or if ZP selfishly decided to take her choice of living or dying away from her:

He also recalled his last conversation with his daughter, one that was positive and uplifting and forward-thinking.

"We were getting her ready for homecoming... we shopped for make-up. She didn't need much. She was absolutely beautiful. It was all about the future and what was coming. That was our last conversation," he said.

Either way ZP destroyed many lives, including Annieka's family's and his own child's. Selfish, selfish act.

More from her dad - I think he's right that poor Annieka was manipulated:

Vaughan previously said there was nothing about his daughter’s behavior in the days before she ran away to indicate anything was wrong, and he believed she was being manipulated.

“My gut tells me there’s some major manipulation and grooming going on,” he told KOIN 6 News Tuesday. “There’s a lot beneath the surface that needs to be addressed and there’s a lot of support that needs to happen.”

There is no information about the sexual abuse charge of Annieka against ZP that was filed in Washington on September 28 and we may never learn the details but if Annieka voluntarily chose to be with him then yeah, I believe she wasn't grokking the danger. Poor little girl. :tears:
