Found Deceased OR - Ashley Real, 22, last seen at fast food restaurant, Portland, 27 Mar 2023

Was Ashley homeless? 22 years old, so young.
This question is hard to answer. Ashley's family members (sister, cousin, uncle, aunt?) make it sound like she had a home in Portland that was available to her. On the other hand, they reported that the Portland police said that Ashley had run away in the past, and we didn't yet learn from these discussions on the internet where she lived during this time, so she may have chosen to live without a regular home or away from her home for periods of time. Yeah, that doesn't fully answer this question.

Ashley Real

Investigators are asking for anyone with information, including anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area of Southeast Judd Road between the end of March 2023 and the beginning of May 2023, to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line -- by phone at 503-723-4949 or by using the online email form at: https://www.clackamas.us/sheriff/tip. Please reference CCSO Case # 23-009521.

Does anyone have guesses as to why investigators are interested in suspicious activity near SE Judd Rd that witnesses may have observed regarding the death of Ashley Real?

I do. I suspect those investigators gathered evidence of that suspicious activity, but they haven't been able to connect it to someone, or this evidence, as it stands, is not enough to prove what happened in this case. What is that evidence? I'm not sure, but it might be things left on or near Ashley's body, footprints, and/or tire tracks of a vehicle that may have been used to transport her. I would guess that the Clackamas County police know a lot more than they are telling us, but that still need more to solve this case. Yes, this is likely part of why they have described Ashley's death as suspicious.

This may well be the case, although the body itself could be considered “evidence” of suspicious activity, seeing as it’s unlikely she put herself there.

It could very well be more than that, but I doubt it’s tracks or prints because AR was missing for ~6 weeks before she was found and was likely there for most of that time, which if true the rain should have taken care of those things.

Yeah, 6 weeks is right for May 7 - March 28, and you are correct rain would hide that quite well.

Yeah, it could be the state of her body, clothing, missing items, etc.

Here's another one on my mind. Did AR have a phone? I think this is possible. She was traveling thru the Gateway Transit Center earlier on the March 27th. She met her uncle at the BK on SE Division St. My guess is she arranged that meeting either by dropping by his home/work or by calling him. And if she does have a phone, then police have ping data on how she got to SE Judd Rd or until it was turned off prior to that.

For sure. I have no idea if she had a phone, but that wouldn't surprise me.

Look up the murder of Loni Kai. This was an actually remarkably similar case to AR's (and to the other recent ones)--somewhat different victimology, but otherwise basically identical--that happened in the west Portland burbs. Not sure if there's a thread on here for her, but info online is not hard to find.

To be clear it's unlikely to be related, as it was more than 20 years ago, but in that case LE asked the public about suspicious activity near the dump site. Someone had seen a car at the site that was probably involved in the body dump, so they were able to get a general vehicle description and learn that there were at least two people involved in at least the disposal part of the crime.

That info never went anywhere, and the case is still unsolved, but I am guessing that is the type of thing they are hoping for in AR's case.

Multiple news agencies, including Willamette Week and later The Oregonian, reported the identity of the person of interest as Jesse Lee Calhoun. He's a current inmate at Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, where he's facing charges not related to the death investigations of the four women. Calhoun, 38, has not been charged in relation to the four deaths.

IMHO A lot if moving parts on this one. I hope they can connect the dots. Not sure on the POI but it would be great if he is the killer and even better already in jail.

The bodies of four women began appearing in wooded areas in northwest Oregon in February, though police initially said the cases appeared to be unconnected. But on Monday, prosecutors dropped a bombshell, saying they are linked and “at least one person of interest” has been identified.

[...]

“Investigators and prosecutors from multiple law enforcement agencies have been working collaboratively, ... and they have determined that there are links between four cases: Kristin Smith, Charity Perry, Bridget Webster, and Ashley Real,” the prosecutor’s office said.

[...]

The women’s bodies were found in Portland and rural areas starting on Feb. 19, with the latest one found on May 7. One body was found about 45 miles (72 kilometers) southwest of Portland, near a creek in Polk County.
  1. The first body discovered was that of Smith, 22, found in a wooded area in a suburb southeast of Portland. Smith's disappearance was reported to police in suburban Gresham on Dec. 22, 2022.
  2. Perry was 24 when she died. Her body was found on April 24 near a state park alongside the Columbia River, east of Portland.
  3. Webster’s body was found on April 30 near Mill Creek in rural northwest Polk County. She was 31.
  4. Real, 22, was last seen at a fast-food restaurant near Portland on March 27, police said. She was reported missing on April 4. Her body was found on May 7 in a forest southeast of Portland.

Sadly, the 72-min interview of Krista Simor, age 43, by Velly Ray (posted by Ray on YouTube on 7/18/2023), paints a pretty clear picture of the sexual relationship between AR and JLC. KS describes JLC's vehicle as a black 2007 Chevy HHR, which can be seen near KS's apt 37 in October of 2021 in Google StreetView. This helps to verify KS story, that JLC lived with her in this ground-floor apartment since around this time until 6/6/2023 when he was arrested.

A pretty reasonable theory is that AR (who went by Ashley Mendoza among this group) got high with JLC in this vehicle and was transported from the Portland area to where her body was found in this same vehicle or KS's. I would guess the Clackamas County PD have about the same theory, since KS said they took all the electronics from her apt (besides a TV) and samples of the rug and vehicle upholstery. Based on her account in this interview, it sounds like the police are trying to match fibers from this apt home or one of the vehicles (KS's or JLC's) to fibers found on or near AR's body. Obviously, they would be trying to match JLC's DNA with samples taken from this crime scene near SE Judd Rd in Eagle Creek as well.

A Portland woman discovered dead in Clackamas County woods in early May reported to police last fall that she was attacked and strangled by Jesse Lee Calhoun, according to her father. Calhoun is now a person of interest in her death and the deaths of three other women.

Her father, Jose Real, told The Associated Press on Friday that he called police on Nov. 11 after she showed up, crying, at his Portland home, saying she had been choked by Calhoun. She had marks on her throat, he said, and he took her to a hospital.

A Portland police officer took an initial report from Real and his daughter and she gave the officer Calhoun’s name. Police wanted her to help find him but she was scared to do so, he said.

Because the location of the alleged assault was outside Portland police jurisdiction, the department referred the case to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Real said he never heard back from the sheriff's office, even though he and his wife called repeatedly.

The bodies of Kristin Smith, 22; Charity Perry, 24; Bridget Webster, 31; and Ashley Real, 22, were found over a three-month period in wooded areas, under a bridge and in a culvert in a roughly 100-mile (160-kilometer) radius, spanning from rural Polk County southwest of Portland to the Columbia River Gorge, east of the city.

ugh...she at least made a report. I wish he was caught BEFORE he killed her.
There are about 150 missing women in the Oregon area, I wonder if he's attached to any other cases.

CORRECTION: 140 Missing Persons from Multnomah County

"Roughly half of the 140 people missing from Multnomah County so far this year, which includes the city of Portland, are women and girls, according to the state’s online database. There are currently 401 active missing-persons cases statewide.

However, Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and now an adjunct professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said the sheer numbers should be considered a public safety concern even if no foul play is suspected."

Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't followed the other three so I don't know any more than what is posted in this thread. Another article mentions "under a bridge" and "in a culvert," and another says "near a creek." All were found in wooded areas. MOO

CP was in a culvert.

I am not sure who the bridge or creek are referring to, but AR was found in the woods at least fairly close to a creek.

KS was in the woods but as far as I know was not near either a bridge or a creek.

I know very little about where BW was found aside from a general area.

But yeah I think it’s safe to say that all of them, with the possible exception of BW, were found in or very near to woods.
