If you would like to experience a tiny bit of the thrill of validation for a survivor, watch the video included in the following article by the Oregonian. For those wondering about Kelly Clark, he's shown for just a couple of seconds smiling at the monetary damages decision at the 1:12 mark on the video. Mr. Lewis, the survivor, looks to be in shock. It's a very memorable moment caught on film. Mr. Lewis kissing his mother will do everybody in.

Jury Finds Boy Scouts Negligent For Sexual Abuse
Awards Kerry Lewis $1.4 Million For Abuse By Assistant Scoutmaster

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Jurors on Tuesday found the Boys Scouts of America negligent and awarded $1.4 million to a former Portland man who was abused by an assistant Scoutmaster in the early 1980s, following a three-week trial in which secret Scout "perversion files" were used as evidence.

The jury also decided the Irving-based Scouts organization was liable for punitive damages that will be decided in a separate phase of the trial. That would be in addition to the $1.4 million.
................................
Clark opened the trial by showing the jury the six boxes of documents. He made little actual use of them during the trial, but during their deliberations the jury had the opportunity to look through them.

There was no mention of whether the jury consulted the files after the verdict was delivered Tuesday morning following two days of deliberations.

so much for blaming the parents!

TY, Mr. Clark!! :blowkiss:

Wow - that's quite the verdict.

I have a complete love-hate relationship with BSA. Both of my sons are in cub scouts. I love a lot of what they teach boys to do.

I abhor the fact that they don't allow homosexuals and people who don't believe in God to participate and all that paramilitary crap leaves me cold.

Plus - it is crazy time-consuming.

Jury in Portland Boy Scouts case begins punitive damages phase today

By The Associated Press
April 20, 2010, 12:25PM

An Portland jury today has begun considering millions of dollars more in possible damages against the Boy Scouts in a case involving a man who was repeatedly molested by an assistant Scoutmaster.

.....................
Patrick Boyle, author of a book about sex abuse within the Scouts, said that in a stretch from 1984 through 1992, the Scouts were sued at least 60 times across the country for alleged sex abuse, with settlements and judgments totaling more than $16 million.

Won't this be interesting.

ITA, SCM, about my love-hate relationship with the Boy Scouts. My husband swears that it was the only bright light in his very abysmal childhood. He felt protected and had a heck of a time on hikes and camp-outs. None of our older boys felt comfortable with it, however, even though we tried. The two oldest were MacGyver types and we thought it would be the perfect fit. It seemed, though, as if they wanted to make their own way and had no interest in anything "organized".

I remember one odd experience. We took our very tender and shy youngest birth son to an orientation at our local school in Petaluma, CA in the early 90s. I was listening raptly to the presentation, when I glanced over at my 11 year old son. He was crying. I immediately took him outside and asked him what was wrong. I'll never forget his words. He said, "Mommy, didn't you see the way those men were looking at me? They are not nice men."

This son, now almost 30, is a bright and accomplished businessman and father of two boys himself. I've always wondered if he sensed something that flew right over the top of my head. Obviously, we did not sign him up. We took him home.

Ore. victim: Scouts had no abuse prevention plan

Posted: Apr 20, 2010 4:39 PM CDT Updated: Apr 20, 2010 7:39 PM CDT
By WILLIAM McCALL
Associated Press Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Lawyers for an Oregon man who won a sex abuse lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America told a jury Tuesday that the organization should pay $25 million in punitive damages for failing to prevent that abuse.
.......................................
Attorneys for Lewis opened the punitive damages phase of the trial on Tuesday by arguing the Scouts never had a plan to protect boys or prevent abuse, including failure to warn parents.

Instead, attorneys KellyClark and Paul Mones said the Scouts relied on secret "ineligible volunteer" or "IV" files, also nicknamed "perversion files," that listed suspected molesters in order to keep them out of the organization.

Mones asked the man now in charge of those files, Nate Marshall, whether any evaluation or analysis had been done on the files to help create a protection or prevention program, and Marshall replied, "No."

"So, to the best of your knowledge, the Boy Scouts of America never used the IV files to determine the effectiveness of a protection program?" Mones asked.

"Correct," Marshall said.

Apparently, the BSA *still* doesn't have any protection plans -- here's a "triple threat"

Soccer coach for a Catholic Church who was involved in Cub Scouts!!

A volunteer assistant soccer coach at St. Ursula Catholic Church in Parkville was arrested this week on charges of molesting a 9-year-old girl.

Alexander Sims also volunteered with two church-affiliated Cub Scout troops, and Baltimore County police fear there may be other victims.

TM--Remember the guy in San Antonio, Scott Hartman, who was recently arrested for child abuse (the one whose wife slapped the child when he mentioned the abuse)? He was a BS leader. As was the NY Corrections Office in Gowanda, Shawn Pound, who was arrested in his home as his kids ate breakfast in a kitchen where "rape" was the search word on the computer. I think that Police Chief Mike Akins of Kansas was also involved with BS. Odd, how it comes up so often. These guys must be really fine fellows to volunteer, and all.

I read an article today that had a possible way to hold groups like this accountable...not that I'm saying the BSA knew about this soccer-coaching Cub Scout volunteer -- but - wow- it is a promising path to accountability.

The U.S. is uniquely positioned to take more aggressive steps. One promising path: amending the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) laws to include institutionally facilitated child sex abuse. These laws could then be used against any organization, religious or otherwise, that has knowingly allowed children to come into harm.

My daughter attended a different Catholic school in Baltimore. When she was in high school she was having trouble with a lay teacher. He very obviously favored her and would give her A's for bad work and then started calling her pet names and then finally touched her butt. We reported it and it was investigated. Although it was deemed unsubstantiated (of course) in the end, that teacher was never at that school again. So, while the school didn't keep us informed of any disciplinary measures, apparently he was quickly removed.

Note: I just realized this post has absolutely nothing to do with the boy scouts. Sorry. I was hung up on the Baltimore Catholic school thing.

Scouts defend training program in sex abuse case

By Associated Press
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - Added 5m ago

PORTLAND, Ore. — An executive with the Boy Scouts of America says the organization has been working on a training program to prevent child sex abuse since the 1980s but it still is not mandatory for Scout leaders.

James Terry outlined the program today to a Portland jury that is considering punitive damages against the Boy Scouts in a sex abuse case.

Terry is chief financial officer for the Scouts at its Texas headquarters and chairs its committee on youth protection training.

a little more here

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/west/view.bg?articleid=1249046

Sounds like their 'training program' isn't doing much to prevent the sex abuse.

And can someone tell me why a Chief Financial Officer is chairman of youth protection training???

Why not a COO instead of CFO?

Oh never mind -- it makes perfect sense for the Chief of Finances to oversee a protection program that doesn't protect.

Yeah Kelly!!!!!!! I'm in delighted shock.

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/04/jury_awards_millions_in_punati.html

Portland jury awards 18.5 million in punitive damages

"A Multnomah County jury said the Boy Scouts of America must pay $18.5 million for the sexual abuse a former Scout suffered as a child -- the largest such award levied against the organization.

Attorneys for the former Scout, 38-year-old Kerry Lewis, said the vast majority of sexual-abuse lawsuits against the Boy Scouts of America since the 1980s have settled quietly, and the issue largely has stayed out of the national spotlight. They said Friday's verdict, however, exposed the organization's dark history with pedophiles and its unwillingness to come to terms with the problem...."

Six men settle cases with Boy Scouts for childhood abuse by leader

"Six men who were molested by a former Portland Scout leader as children have settled their cases with the Boy Scouts of America, their attorneys announced today.

The settlement, reached last week, prevents the attorneys and the men from talking about how much money each received in compensation for abuse that happened in the 1980s. The amount, however, likely reaches into the multiple millions of dollars, considering the Boy Scouts of America also have agreed to pay the state $2.25 million in punitive damages as part of the settlement....."

I wish we could have a thread on each and every one of these creepers but this will have to be the spot. Yet another article about the failure of the Boy Scouts to report child sexual abuse. Great plan~"take care of it quietly":

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45088661/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/#.TqygK2CJkjQ

"Boy Scout officials in the U.S. and Canada not only failed to stop an admitted child molester in their ranks, but sometimes helped cover his tracks, according to confidential records, court files and interviews with victims and their families. A Los Angeles Times and Canadian Broadcasting Corp. investigation published Saturday finds scout leader Rick Turley molested at least 15 children over nearly two decades, most of whom he met through American and Canadian Scouting beginning in the 1970s. Boy Scouts of America officials didn't call police in 1979 after Turley acknowledged molesting three Orange County boys..."

and

"...You do not want to broadcast to the entire population that these things happen," A. Buford Hill Jr., a former Orange County Scouting executive, said of officials' decision not to contact authorities. "You take care of it quietly and make sure it never happens again." It happened again. Turley returned to his native Canada, where he signed on with Scouts Canada, and continued his abuses for at least a decade. Now 58 and working at an Alberta truck-stop motel, Turley says he is surprised by how often he got away with it. "It was easy," he said..."

and

"...Turley is one of more than 5,000 suspected child molesters named in confidential documents kept by the Boy Scouts of America. The records — called the "perversion files" by the Scouts — include admissions of guilt as well as unproven allegations...."

and

"...The Oregon Supreme Court is now weighing a request by newspapers, a wire service and broadcasters to open about 1,200 more files in the wake of a nearly $20-million judgment in a Portland sex abuse case last year...."
