Found Deceased OR - Brianna Judge, 23, Clatsop County, 10 Jan 2017

If she jumped into the Nehalem she wouldn't die from impact, because the bridge isn't high enough, but the water would have been fast flowing and very cold. Historic data suggests an average water temperature of around 40 degrees F for Foss, Oregon. Elsie is further inland and at a higher elevation, so probably colder than that. Additionally, with a colder than average Winter so far, I don't think it's out of the question for the water to have been in the 30s.

According to survival charts, the expected time of consciousness in water that cold is between 15-30 minutes. :(

But is it deep? Flowing quickly? Just seems to me if she jumped and wasn't hurt badly it's hard, I assume, to then just sit in the water waiting to die.

I'm more familiar with the Nehalem river near Vernonia, which is probably similar to Jewell/Elsie. It can be anywhere from 6-10 feet deep in the Winter - more if there is a lot of rainfall or snow melt. Flood stage is 12 feet. It's not a particularly deep or dangerous river, but Brianna may not be able to touch the bottom. It flows fast enough that it usually doesn't freeze. I've never seen it frozen over.

I'm concerned that she would have already been well on her way to hypothermia based on her attire.

Good point.

Looking back at the weather January 10, I'm not sure if anyone posted that it snowed overnight and shut down nearby schools in the Jewell School District and mail deliveries on Jan. 11. So wherever Brianna went, the snow would have caught up with her that night.

The comments under the Clatsop County Sheriff FB post about the search and the boots being turned in has interesting information...this falls in the category of rumor but if they are true they explain when Brianna was reported missing (4 days after disappearing) and why the boots were turned in recently rather than being untouched (they were found and picked up before she was reported missing and not connected to Brianna's disappearance until recently). Of course, we don't know if they are actually Brianna's boots.

Okay after reading more information about the timeline of events on the evening of January 10 and the subsequent four day waiting period before her *mother* called police, I'm leaning towards foul play. I just can't imagine a scenario where my SO goes missing and I don't think to call his family or report it for four days. FOUR DAYS. Ugh.

Agreed.

My thought too. But how to reconcile the idea of foul play with an SO who has been actively posting recently and organizing searches (rumor). I guess anything is possible....fell asleep, she wasn't back in the morning, went looking (difficult because of overnight snow), hoped she'd hitched a ride somewhere, thinks you can't report an adult missing right away, etc. I certainly hope it was a case of dumb fatal mistakes rather than the usual scenario we are used to around WS. Otherwise, someone is doing a snow job. :(

The Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office announced it has no further searches planned for the woman who went missing in Elsie in January.
http://www.dailyastorian.com/Local_News/20170206/no-further-searches-planned-for-missing-woman

CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. — Deputies said they will no longer be searching for a 23-year-old Clatsop County woman who hasn't been seen or heard from since Jan. 10, saying they will instead “focus on other aspects of the investigation.”

Oddest case ever

I'm glad they're still investigating though.

Deputies said they are still investigating, but there is no evidence to establish that Judge’s disappearance is the result of a criminal act. Anyone with information regarding the case is encouraged to call 503-325-2061.

So they think it's voluntary...why haven't we seen a push by her family at all?

  • #33
This is where I live and I've noticed most people are hoping for the best but don't believe she's alive anymore. I know if I fell into that water at night I wouldn't be alive but I don't believe she would go swimming at the night time and I don't believe she would take her boots off to walk on the bridge and she had apparently had a fight with her bf so perhaps she killed herself(a leap from that to that I know) or she was taken and the perp made her take her boots off or left them as a red herring.

  • #34
And our cops wouldn't allow her bf to report her missing until the certain amount of time had passed which is crap with how little crime we have here that would be more important than a missing girl. I've seen her around town before I believe and maybe met her but am not sure(I'm pretty social) so it's hard for me to guess if she would have her herself or if she's the type who never would but when googling her name for updates I found it weird to find this thread since I live here...

Oh boy. Anyone local know any details with that bridge? If she jumped would it be high enough for certain death? But who would take their boots off for that.
It's not that high my mom and me are discussing that now. I live in Astoria but the times we've driven over the bridge we'd guess it's maybe 10-20 feet. In my mind Elsie and jewell are the same town they're super tiny so I think that's why articles keep saying one or the other.

While I think suicide is possible, I think we have seen enough of these to figure it is also possible he planted the boots there to suggest suicide, not considering things a suicidal person considers like "is this bridge tall enough?" We'd have to know more about how and exactly where they were found - it is rea;;y unfortunate these people didn't call police to report them and instead touched and moved them.

Suicidal people do weird things like take their shoes off before jumping. If she was concerned the fall itself wouldn't kill her, she may have discarded shoes to make sure the hypothermia does (or because hypothermia was already a factor). The shallow nature of this creek makes it look like it would freeze in winter though and that area should have a lot of snow to detect footprints etc.

I won't be surprised if she is found in or near the river, but I also don't think she killed herself. Here is another case like this one where another Brianna had a fight with her boyfriend, then "took a walk" only to be found in the river weeks later.

Not to sound morbid but when people around here decide to kill thenselves they usually opt for the megler and that is our tallest one. I'be never heard of any other one being used for suicide but the boots seem like a red herring to confuse us and if I was going to kill myself drowning wouldn't be how and I would know that the jump wouldn't kill me and that I would drown. I believe the water would have been fast moving and very very cold but why take off the boots to kill herself?

I've yet to hear anyone say voluntary unless you mean suicide or something because that's what I hear most besides foul play or my moms theory that she took her boots off to walk the side of the bridge and slipped which I'm not buying. My brothers gf I think had to have gone to school with her and known her but I've yet to mention it. We had another weird case like this many years back that's marry bethin Evans and she vanished with no trace(as far as I know) or money or purse etc and in a bridesmaid dress. I wouldn't be surprised if we had some serial killer type in this town. I don't think her bf had anything to do with it but what if someone she told that they'd had a fight did it knowing we'd blame the bf and left the boots to either confuse us or make us think she jumped?

I regret reading those comments on the fb post but I felt like the first ones by the person people keep saying to question came off as weird and like he was inserting himself and demanding cops answer his questions it's weird... hoping my friends know why he's being mentioned and I even commented on both the comments about questioning him to see if someone answers but I got an icky cringe type feeling reading his stuff.

When first reading this case I thought perhaps the elements that night was to her demise or she committed suicide. After reading that her boots were found I feel there was foul play. It does not make any sense why she would take her boots off. I feel someone placed them there.

So our sherrifs facebook had an update. I find it odd that her shoes had been moved and the dude people keep saying to question was actually involved in a girls murder and helping hide her body years back. His dads a cop or the old sheriff so he may have got off easy but he was with one or two dudes who stabbed and murdered a girl on the beach and didn't stop them and supposedly used being slow as an excuse and helped them hide the body and went with them to do so. That said now I see why people keep saying he needs to be questioned and how he seems to be inserting himself is even more odd since his remarks already creeped me out especially the one where he sounds like he's taking credit for starting the search and rescue... not sure I can find an article on that but if anyone looks his name up I imagine they'll find it and he's the first person who commented on the previously linked fb thing here. I've yet to google it and only know this from what my mother and others told me when I inquired about him. Not saying he's guilty in this case but it sure doesn't sound like he's a good person so I see why anyone may be thinking that.
