@Sleuth2010,
Re the information about the bullets and the forensics, I'm only repeating (word for word) what the Jackson County Sheriff Office Investigator Pollard said. Please read the linked article. Here is a summation of the quote:
"Forensics, Pollard said, do not connect Lewis' murder with one that was reported the same day. Transient Troy Carney shot to death in Central Point on the greenway."
"The bullet that killed Mr. Carney, and the one that killed Mr. Lewis are similar, but the ballistics don't match."
Imo Pollard's statement is very clear. He is saying (again jmo) that there is NO known connection between the cases.
There are things to consider though imo. Although it would be very unusual, could both TDC and DL have been killed with the same caliber bullet (I think most would agree that the most common handgun ammo sizes are .380 acp 9mm, .40 acp, .357 cal, and .45 acp, - though you will occasionally come across a smaller 22 or .25 cal.? I think it's certainly possible. Or even the same brand of the same caliber bullet? Again, possible . Even this isn't a sure link, however. Not without prints or DNA
I have taken LE's statement that the bullets were similar to mean they were possibly the same caliber (size) ammo (imo, most widely used is 9mm), - but that the marking left by the firing pin and the barrel indicated that different guns were used in each crime.
This alone does not 100 percent discount any possible connection, but it points more in the direction of there being no connection - than in the direction of them being connected
Yes I am familiar with the area roads from Google Maps. I have not personally travelled them. I also know (or knew - l(would have to look back at my notes to remind myself) who lives along DIMR within a couple of miles in each direction from DL's.
Imo there are several in the DIMR / Hyatt Lake area that might have been in conflict with DL for one reason or another. I have other personal POI's as well that I can't mention here - I don't think any of them though knew TDC.
Without absolutely being 100 percent sure that the crimes are specifically connected, imo it is safer, more direct, and less biased if both investigation teams first focus on the facts found in just their respective investigations. Otherwise, possible rabbit holes, There was one poster here a while back (RC if I remember correctly) who was convinced that one of DL's siblings was a possible perp
You wouldn't believe the hoop jumping this OP had to do to make such a scenario fit both crimes: when did they drive, with whom, when did they fly, when did they return to their home state, and when did they come back? Were they camping? Did they just happened to meet TDC at Central Point Truck Stop? Did they own a handgun? Would have owned or access to two? Why weren't they on Pilot cctv if they had met TDC there? Not saying it's totally impossible, but, it's just a case of trying to force facts to fit an already established narrative that could be flawed
I'm as frustrated as you are, and want both crimes solved yesterday. There has been no Justice for Dave and Troy. The cases should not be cold cases. And imo, LE owes the public some more information to push the case along (it's been 17 years)
All jmo
