Details of Disappearance

Ian was last seen offshore north of the Siuslaw River Jetty near Driftwood Shores Resort in Florence, Oregon at approximately 1:30 p.m. on June 28, 2005. He was playing in the water with two friends when he developed a cramp in his leg and was swept out to sea.

The Coast Guard arrived within ten minutes of the 911 call. Searchers saw Ian in the water twice, but they were unable to reach him due to the rough water. Both times he appeared to be dead. After the second sighting, an extensive search turned up no sign of him.

Ian was involved with football, wrestling and baseball at the time of his disappearance. He was also an avid camper and a member of the Boy Scouts. He left behind four siblings. Ian is presumed to have drowned.

FLORENCE - A 15-year-old boy missing in the water north of the Siuslaw River Jetty was presumed drowned Tuesday after an extensive search failed to find him, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

The Florence boy, identified by the sheriff's office as Ian Foster, was last seen alive near Driftwood Shores Resort, where he was playing in the surf with two female friends, who told police the boy had a cramp in his leg.

"The ocean took him out and they weren't able to touch bottom anymore," Lane County marine deputy Paul Vitus said. "The girls went back to shore because they couldn't stay afloat."

Two 47-foot life boats from Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River arrived within 10 minutes of a 911 call at 1:35 p.m., the Coast Guard said.

Vitus said the Coast Guard was able to see the boy twice, but because of rough water, could not reach him.

"One time he surfaced and went back under," Vitus said. "He didn't look alive when they saw him. With the waves and tides and everything else that was going on, they weren't able to get to him. The water conditions contributed immensely to the young man's demise."

The Coast Guard station in North Bend diverted two HH-65 Dolphin helicopters to the area, and the Siuslaw River station sent a ground party to search from the beach, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Steven Kent said the search was suspended at 7:37 p.m.

The Florence Fire Department, Western Lane Ambulance and a dive team from North Bend Fire and Rescue helped in the search. The sheriff's office will resume its search today.
