Found Deceased OR - Joshua McCoy, 5, Autism, goes by "Josh" or "Joshie", may not respond, missing when mom woke up frm nap at 5:30pm, Stage Rd, Hauser, 10 Nov 2024

According to the article, the search effort is being conducted about 3 and a quarter football fields in length in every direction. So, about 1/5 of a mile in every direction.

IMHO, that's nowhere near enough for an autistic child. He could have been that far away, IMHO, by the time she woke up and realized he's missing.
Perhaps it's due to the terrain? If on city streets, yeah, expand the search, as it's easily walkable, but if in an area people can't easily walk around in... then pull it in due to the impossibility of being further than unwalkable areas.

I noticed this in the article:

“Almost always the person is found within 300 meters of the last known location, and we’ve already expanded well beyond the 300-meter point,” said Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio, per CBS affiliate KPIC.

At least it's comforting that they've gone past the average.

“Nothing is being ruled out at this time as we are considering all possible avenues,” the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said in an update on Monday. “We maintain hope that Joshua will be found alive and well.”

Bbm.
That's an odd thing to say this early in the search ?

Scary and unsettling.
Still on the fence regarding anything hinky, though.
Omo.

Perhaps their hinky meters went off when interviewing the mother. Then I can see them saying "“Nothing is being ruled out at this time as we are considering all possible avenues,” the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said"

They also mentioned "clues" which I found kinda odd. I'd think evidence of him walking about would be called "evidence of him passing through" or some such thing, not clues. 'Clues' says something completely different to me. Like... clues to his disappearance, which is not the same as evidence that he passed through. JMO.

they have found 'some clues' in their search but 'nothing definitive'.

Joshua's birthday is Saturday. How many times have children gone missing right before holidays and birthdays?
As the previous poster ( Gobstopper ) stated, " When was Joshua seen by another person?". How many in the home?
I think in some of those cases, not saying that is the case here, when a child's parents reside in two separate households (sometimes even states), often the approaching holidays can lead to kids begin reported missing as transfers of custody are impending for holiday visits etc.

I can only think of 1 reason tbh.
It sounds as if there wasn't a big delay in reporting. Some of the early reporting was confusing. She woke at around 5:30 pm to find him missing. She reported him that evening, after sundown. Sunset tonight in Hauser OR will take place at 4:54pm.

So that sounds to me as if she reported him missing immediately upon waking and finding him gone. LE arrived, did "initial assessment" some searches began, at some point the pond was drained and press alerted.

I don't know. I am still riding the fence on this one. The lack of LE asking people to check their own properties and outbuildings concerns me. I get them not wanting the public out searching for little Josh. but the more time passes the worse the odds of a happy ending.

I get the feel LE know or suspect a lot more than they are releasing to the public.

Such a cutie patootie. Hoping against hope I can come down off the fence because he is found safe somewhere.

Thanks for the map, @CHEL !

It's concerning that there are bodies of water close by, given Joshua is on the spectrum ?
Hoping for good news soon, but it's been a while and the longer that time goes by .... poor little boy. :(
Anyway, fingers crossed !
Omo.
Yes I agree was wondering myself about the wooded location with a 5 year old with ASD.
I also thought the same about the case of Nóra Quorin choosing to holiday in the deep jungle with a special needs child an odd choice.
Hoping for a positive outcome for the little guy

Sleep issues are common in autistic kiddos. Of course, we have no idea how Joshie's autism affected his sleep/life, but it's not uncommon for autistic people to have irregular sleep schedules or patterns. I'm not going to side eye the long nap until more comes out about this case that gives us more reason to suspect something. My step son is autistic. He has sleep problems that upset daily life and he also only tiptoes (despite years of intervention and physical therapy) so he's very quiet when he walks and he can "sneak off" easily. This is a special needs missing boy, and so the search and situation has to be looked at with more nuance than with a neurotypical missing child IMO.
Edit: spelling mistake
Totally agree with this. I work with families of small children with all types of developmental delays, including kids who are on the spectrum and it is very common for kids with certain medical and behavioral issues to sleep erratically. I have a child I’m seeing now around this age who sleeps 2 am to 6 am and takes a very long afternoon “nap.” Because Mom is awake with him until 2 am and up at 6 am, she also sleeps in the afternoon.

My own experience

Just curious how long the mother's naps are on average?

I found the wording concerning because I tend to view evidence as evidence in the criminal trial sense (especially since we've had several trial watches recently at WS) but I guess they could be referring to evidence of his presence or his passing through a certain area in the search zone?? Clues would have been better used if that is the case JMO.

I also find it unusual that LE hasn't asked the public to search their own property and out buildings in case Josh took cover or hid from the elements somewhere. IME that is SOP in most small child wandered off missing cases.
bbm ---- This has bothered me from the beginning WRT hiding-out places, etc.
In other missing children situations, etc., I've seen more than a couple of search guidelines for missing children where the Powers That Be ask for those type searches being done sooner than later.
Kids are curious and have amazing ideas for places to hide or who-knows-what -- a hideout, playing hide & seek, club house, doll house, jailhouse, secret place, etc., etc. JMO.
Maybe those type searches were one of the first places to look, IDK.
And apparently, no one has heard a child crying, screaming, giggling, lots of noise, etc.
SMH and hoping for the best.

Same concerns here and hoping for the best

Many times, when police do not want residents' help with searches, it is (at least in part) because they have a pretty good idea of what they are going to find and don't want untrained civilians tripping over such a sight. IMO MOO etc

What are the temps in the area? No mention of wearing shoes or socks on? Coat? You are not going too far in the woods without shoes. I have not even seen what he was wearing listed anywhere unless I missed it.
Why would his clothing he had on not be listed?

If what mom says is true, I'd think he'd either be barefoot or wearing socks since he was put down for a nap and "gone when she woke up 4.5 hrs later". Either that or he knows how to put on his shoes. JMO
