Good old ballot measure 11. I voted YES in 1994 and would do it again in a heartbeat. Well if I still lived in Oregon. Happy to see this case finally heating up.

Glazier murder trail set to begin

A Jackson County cold case is about to go to trial.

[snip]

Now the court has more than 600 potential jurors completing pamphlets, full of questions which will help lawyers involved in this case to determine an impartial jury.

Simmons' trial is set to begin Tuesday. News 10 will have an in-depth look at the case that evening in our 6 p.m. newscast.

Simmons convicted of manslaughter, not murder, in Glazier death

William Frank Simmons showed little reaction as a Jackson County jury found him guilty of first-degree manslaughter Tuesday afternoon, but not guilty of murder in the 1996 death of Kaelin Glazier.

[snip]

Huddleston said he added the lesser crime to the circumstantial case on the chance jurors had a hard time determining Simmons intentionally killed Kaelin on that moonless November night after the two teens watched a video together.

'They wouldn't listen to any other theory but runaway'

Kaelin Glazier's two best friends understand it was unlikely the Ruch teen would have been recovered alive after the fateful night she visited William Simmons' trailer in 1996. But 15 years later, they still remember their frustration with police who labeled the missing girl as "just a runaway."

The sheriff's department now thoroughly investigates all reports of missing persons. And every person reported as missing is considered to be "at risk" until significant information to the contrary is confirmed, he said.

"We don't even like to use the word 'runaway.' It has a whole different mindset. It's almost dismissive," Fagan said, adding children who do intentionally run away often become victims of crime and need to be protected.

I think more police departments need to learn a lesson or two from the changes made here. :)
