Memorial for Missing Brother - August 2016

Thirty years after Kerby Bessey disappeared, family and friends are making plans to gather together to memorialize him later this month at Sunset Beach.

His sister, Annette Bessey, said it's been really hard not knowing what happened to him.

“When you don't know 100 percent sure that this is what happened it kind of makes you go into a tailspin, it's just really hard,” she said.

Coos Bay police Chief Gary McCullough said his department has investigated every tip it has gotten about the case. In 2010, he said the department brought cadaver dogs to an area in Myrtle Point to search for a body, to no avail.

Bessey said she thinks she knows what happened to her brother, it’s just a matter of finding evidence. But even if investigators found a body, Bessey said she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to move on.

“Sometimes I worry that he didn’t get laid to rest properly,” Bessey said, “I’m just hoping that somehow in your brain you’ll just get to a better place. But, I don’t know if I ever will.”

Blue Moon Cafe is still open in Coos Bay - address is 871 S Broadway, Coos Bay, OR 97420, United States

Gunther, John "August mystery haunted another family," The World, August 31, 1996, pg 1, 3

"Mom got a call from him at 6 a.m that morning. He told her he had things to do and would be back late."

"Annette Bessey [his sister] heard...that her brother had been murdered during a drug deal."

"Kerby was involved in a real fast group dealing marijuana and cocaine in a very large quantities."

"[He had] some kind of drug debt...he was fearful of somebody out of Jackson County."

"somebody had put a contract on him for $5,000 had he had come back to Coos Bay to hide out."

"He often worked on offshore oil rigs, but was recovering from surgery at the time of his disappearance."

Long shot but wonder if this UP could be a match:

UP85991
Date Found: August 31, 1986
Location: Mohave County, Arizona
Race: White / Caucasian
Age: 30-40
Height: 6' 0"(72 inches) , Measured
Weight: 200 lbs, Measured
Hair: Blond/Strawberry
Eyes: Unknown
Clothing: Light blue and white checkered pullover, blue slacks, tan socks and brown slip-on shoes. The victim was wearing tan swim shorts underneath his pants. The victim had a Longiens watch in his left front pants pocket.
Circumstances: Decedent was found on the side of the road by a passing motorist on Highway 93, Milepost 11.3,

Some statistics don't match (location, hair, weight) but clothing description sounds pretty similar and time line would match up. This UP was also found wearing swim shorts would be weird for the desert of Arizona but pretty normal for Coos Bay.

#UP10891
Location Found: Cannon Beach, OR
Date Body Found: September 10, 1986
Estimated Age: 30 - 45
Estimated Year of Death: 1985 - 1986
Estimated PMI: Months
Height: 6'0" (72 inches), Measured
Weight: 160 lbs, Estimated
Hair Color: Long, reddish-brown
Eye Color: Unknown
Race/Ethnicity: White / Caucasian
Circumstances: Body of a red-headed adult male with a reddish-brown beard and mustache was discovered in a tent near the Cannon Beach highway 101 junction.

The height and age are both slightly off, but if Kerby was trying to "hide out" as was suggested in the article posted up-thread, camping out might make sense.
