Divers recover body of man who drowned in Columbia River while trying to save swimmer
Deputies said Kevin McDowell, 35, drowned after he jumped into the water to help a woman who was struggling to swim. The woman was able to make it to safety.

According to witnesses, the man jumped into the water from a boat to help a woman who was struggling to swim but did not resurface, the sheriff's office said in a release. He was identified on Monday as 35-year-old Kevin McDowell.

On Monday, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office River Patrol Unit and Dive Team performed additional searches for McDowell. But with “limited underwater visibility and strong currents,” McDowell’s body wasn’t located. The sheriff’s office says marine deputies will perform additional searches when the call volume allows.
