OR - Leah Freeman, 15, found murdered, Coquille, 28 June 2000

Is there a reason why it took them 10 years to finally arrest Nick?

I'm surprised he didn't leave Oregon after Leah turned up missing. I guess he though he was not a suspect.

Yeah there is. Our police department was terrible back then. We didn't get our new Chief of Police until I think 2008. HE cared enough to check Leah's case out. The first Chief did NOTHING. Our entire department is new now. Not one officer from when Leah disappeared is there anymore. Didn't you see the 20/20 show? Try dealing with a Chief like that. He showed his true colors on the segment if you ask me. IMO the Vidocq Society really helped the investigation too. What an organization. Amazing. Of course the first Chief wouldn't ask for help. He just didn't care.
I think Nick knew he was a suspect from the very beginning. Why leave Oregon? His family is here. He has a child here. He simply thought he had gotten away with it. That's just how smug he is.

Cory- Do you know if the inmate who attacked Nick had any prior connection to him or your daughter, Leah? Have you heard anything else regarding Nick's struggles in prison awaiting trial?

Missing Bud..

I have no idea if the inmate that attacked Nick had any prior connection to Nick. As for Leah, I'm pretty certain there was no connection to her. I believe he is from Hawaii and what he is/was doing here I have no idea. And no I have heard no other news regarding any struggles for Nick while awaiting trial.

What's the latest? Any concerns on how the delay may affect the trial outcome? Is it definitely set to start on 7/5/11?

I have been searching and googling and cannot find anything about the start date for this trial, the most recent things I find are about the trial being delayed from May until July 5th...but nothing newer.

Does anyone know? Thank you.

Jury selection began yesterday morning, continued through the afternoon, and should wrap up today.

Opening arguements possible.

I will keep the case archive updated.

Cory, I hope that angel on your shoulder gets her justice.

Oregon is not Florida. You won't have the info like the Casey case. :(

Super short article. Hard to snip it! The jury also took a bus tour of the locations that will be mentioned during the trial. PLEASE JURY, DON'T BE LIKE THE CASEY JURY.

Man ordered to stop photographing jurors

A Myrtle Point man took pictures of potential jurors in Nick McGuffin's murder trial as they exited the courthouse for a lunch break Wednesday afternoon.

Coos County Circuit Court Judge Richard Barron ordered Phil Logan-Kelly to stop taking photos, and had him escorted off courthouse property.

Why does he think he needs to take the pictures?? Sounds to me like someone just being belligerent. Just leave them alone. When the trial is over you can look all you want.
