Opening arguments completed

Testimony from witnesses who have recently come forward will prove Nicholas McGuffin guilty of the murder of Leah Freeman, District Attorney Paul Frasier said this morning during opening arguments in McGuffin's trial.

In their opening arguments, the defense maintained there isn't enough evidence to prove McGuffin guilty in the 2000 slaying and that, in fact, evidence proves that he couldn't have committed the crime.

Court is recessed until Monday at 9a. The judge has a conflict tomorrow. Some of the comments on the articles are SO rude. I hope all these people never have to walk in Cory's shoes and hear people say nasty things. UGH.

Tuesday’s testimony brought to light the difficulties in trying a murder case over a decade after the victim was killed. Several witnesses have made differing statements between 2000 and 2010; some simply don't remember what they told investigators back when Leah Freeman went missing 11 years ago.

COQUILLE, ORE. - Because the body of Leah Freeman was so badly decomposed, the medical examiners and forensic scientists who examined her remains, are still inconclusive about her cause of death.

Multimedia Watch The Video They do all seem to agree, however, that her death was the result of some sort of homicide.

With the prosecution wrapping up it's case just before the lunch break Thursday afternoon, a medical examiner and forensic expert took to the stand to explain their findings.

COQUILLE – Is Nicholas McGuffin the haunted boyfriend pursued by the state at the expense of finding Leah Freeman's real killer? Or is he an arrogant killer, whose anger escalated to violence and murder during a lover's quarrel?

Those are the possibilities jurors must now consider nine days into the murder trial of McGuffin, accused of killing Leah Freeman, 15, on a summer night in 2000. The jurors went into deliberations at about 3:15 p.m. Monday and left the courthouse about 5:45 p.m. without reaching a verdict.

Interesting that jury has to be 12-0 to convict on murder, but only 10-2 to either: convict on manslughter or acquit.

I think it might be a 10-year mandatory minimum. All things considered, there's justice. It was a near-impossible task. He got away with it for a long long time.
Now he will sit in jail for a long time at least.

I'd have preferred 25-to life.
But at least Leah's case didn't get something like the idiot Pinellas jury.

Wow, I can't believe this case for Leah is finally over. If not the desired outcome, at least he is going to serve time for her murder.

About 2 years and 9 months ago I put up a post hoping to help Cory, even if only in some very small way. So glad the day finally came!!!!! Thanks to everyone for your support of Cory and her family. Justice for Leah. You all are the best.
