Hunting camp is a time-honored fall tradition in rural areas of the Northwest. Kids skip school to learn hunting skills from their parents and grandparents.

When the timber industry dominated the rural economy, sawmills would shut down for a week to let workers have time to bag a buck that would help feed their family through the winter.

There was no immediate word on a motive or possible charges against the teen. Sheriff Glenn Palmer said he filled out a probable cause affidavit, listing two counts each of homicide and unlawful use of a firearm. He said the boy was expected to recover from the gunshot wound.

Authorities were not saying just what happened at the cabin.

One victim was shot inside the cabin, another outside, and a rifle and pistol were involved, but the gun visible in the photograph was not involved, Palmer said. The shooting did not appear to be alcohol-related.

And I don't believe he shot them over an argument about which side of the bed one got. This stinks.

Dillan Dakota Easley, 15, will spend up to age 25 in custody for killing his foster father and another man in 2013. Circuit Judge J. Burdette Pratt issued that ruling this afternoon after defense attorneys and state prosecutors reached a resolution in the case...

Easley, who was 14 at the time, has been at the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections juvenile holding facility since the crimes. The judge ordered him to the custody of the Oregon Youth Authority, and he is expected to be transferred to MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn.

According to his statement, which was played in open court at an earlier hearing, the boy got hold of a loaded .44 Magnum revolver. He had heard there were wolves around, and thinking he saw a pair of eyes in the darkness, he fired, hitting Gilliland.

Then he went inside the cabin, where he got more scared because people were yelling at him. The boy fired wildly toward the upstairs loft, where others in the party were sleeping. A bullet passed through a bookcase and hit Piete, who was standing after being awakened by the gunfire.

The boy grabbed a rifle on his way out the door, and while outside, fell and shot himself in the leg with the revolver. Using the rifle as a crutch, he made his way back to the cabin. One of the other men had driven to the little town of Granite to call 911. Another taped the boy to a chair until deputies arrived.
