Former Salem-Keizer district teacher charged in abuse of twin infants Aug 13, 2025
Oregon middle school math teacher accused of starving and abusing his six week old twins
Law&Crime Network on the case with Chris Stewart

Salem, Oregon
Army Captain Reece Sorenson, 28 yr old middle school math teacher has been accused of abuse of his six week old girl and boy twins.
The twins flinch when people come near them. Their mother does not trust him to be alone with his infant twins.
He admits to stuffing a rag in his daughter’s mouth to prevent her from crying, so he could sleep, bruising around her mouth. He was at his ‘wit’s end‘. He also admitted to pushing his fist into the stomachs to help them relieve gas.
Baby brought to the hospital due to issue swallowing- a call by doctors to CPS.

Both twins were admitted to hospital, suffered malnutrition, broken ribs, blood shot eyes from vomiting.

Sorenson has been dismissed from his middle school math position.

It sounds like those poor babies already have attachment issues. They're only 6 weeks old and have learned to flinch when people come near. Heartbreaking.

Monster!!!!! This makes me physically ill - OMG

Hoping they will have a chance to know what love is, as soon as possible -- I have no idea how long that might take. Also hoping that since they are so young they will lose that hurt and scared feeling. Also hoping that the babies will get through this -- how much damage was done medically, etc.?
Is the mother around? If so, where was the mother when this was going on?
Did she know this horror was happening?
I can imagine that there are many, many people who would like to have these wonderful little ones.

What a monster looks like... I hope someone relieves his gas for him in prison the same way he did to his tiny, innocent, helpless infants. I would LOVE to get my hands on him.

I do not have children, but if you hand me a tiny crying baby, my first thoughts are, "You are very small and fragile and I must protect you with my life."
My second is to put them against my chest and walk up and down patting them.
Don't know where these people get punches from.

I didn't even know six week olds could physically flinch. How heartbreaking.

Yeah, I was fine not knowing that.

I’m confused about moms role and where she has been

I'm wondering if the mother was mentally disabled, or so severely abused by him, she wouldn't even feed her own babies because he would object? I'd also be finding out if he did anything inappropriate to the kids at that school.

I’m not
These are six week old twins, my guess she maybe be trying to catch up on her sleep and he at times gets up and ‘cares’ for them during the night or on weekends.

I’m a mom, my son was born early and my two are 16 months apart.
I can kinda imagine what it is like to have twins- twice the diapers, twice the breast feeding, half the sleep.

Twins are likely less than 6 lbs each, often born before they are full term, don’t have much body fat, so they often have to eat every two or three hours for months.

Just my thoughts… what woman in their right mind would assume their husband would abuse six week old infants he fathered?
She likely did not know what he was doing to them until the hospital visit.

Terrible to even think… but I am curious- how many of us would love a chance to remove that smile from his face?

These two were malnourished… how patient was he with feeding them?
I know how tough it is to breathe and swallow with broken ribs! The little boy had 10 broken ribs
The little girl had pieces of a wash cloth down her throat

These babies were in pain, unbelievable how sick and angry I am. If you don’t have the patience to keep a plant or goldfish alive- please don’t get a pet, or have children!

Good news- his teaching license expires today- Aug 31, 2025! Just maybe he will never be able to step foot in a classroom again!

I think women in their right mind COULD assume their husband was doing something when they noticed things were amiss. What ends up happening, IMO, is they then deny it to themselves. "Nah... it can't be. It just can't." and then they try to tell themselves that they are imagining things because their dear husband would NEVER! (yet some do, unfortunately) :(

Six week old infant twins?
My guess is she didn’t know. Babies are supposed to go in for a doctor appt regularly in the first six months of life. Twins would certainly be weighed to see if they were thriving but they often lose weight just after birth.
One article says the mom began to feel uncomfortable with having him be with either of them alone. So maybe she was beginning to wonder- and then the x ray showing broken ribs and rag down a throat admission made her have to face the fact- she may be raising those twins alone!!

She is six weeks post birth of twins-
I wonder where her Mom is? A sister? A close friend? I’m not sure I could have maintained my sanity without the help of my Mom when my daughter was born and my son was just a bit over a year old.

Of course pregnancies can be unplanned. But.. I wasn’t a nun and yet I managed to not get pregnant until I was 1 year into my marriage in my early 30’s.
So, it is quite possible to prevent pregnancies in 2025 if I could do it in the 1980’s.
I agree wholeheartedly! However, not all women are like you and I.

Women of minority races and those with less than 12 years of education are at high risk of having unwanted children. Fear of complications (not the complications themselves) is the most powerful deterrent to women's use of contraception. Much of this fear is due to bad press.

Also...

In 2022, around 91.8 percent of women had graduated high school or had obtained a higher educational degree in the United States. (That leaves 8.2% that didn't graduate)

That is 8%+ of US women that don't have a diploma. 8% of the US population is ~340 million. About half are women, so let's call it 170M. 8.2% of 170M, that don't have a HS degree, is almost 14M. Sure, not all women without a HS education have unplanned pregnancies, but they do more than those with a higher education. JMO!

Horrible. I can't believe humans treat children like this.

Wow. The dysfunction here is beyond comprehension.

If the baby drives you crazy, leave the room. Walk outside, go for a run. The baby is safer in their crib alone, than stuck in a room with an angry, frustrated person.

There are 100,000 other things to do, than shake a baby.

Wow, the abuse this man was capable of. He could easily have killed the babies doing this.

Wonder whether the pediatrician, other relatives, friends, or babies' mom noticed anything?
