Respectfully snipping for space

That sounds so interesting about your trip to Ireland - it is a really gorgeous place. My maternal grandparents and beyond are Irish (Southern). County Clare too is beautiful.

I am a total Yankophile, I adore the U.S., I've travelled many a state in my 21 years. Still I would like to visit all 50. I want to find a) the time off work and b) a willing volunteer to accompany me to visit all. I studied American Studies at university, from literature to intellectual thought to politics to foreign policy...I love it all. Whilst I feel a huge affinity with America and many of its people, it often - to me - feels like it's just a language that connects us in so many ways. Our missing persons cases are so different, confined to an island. Your states are vast, beautiful, remote, serene... I have looked at the area Steph lives in and I just think wow. It is so rare here to find such a gorgeous, secluded, green area. I think of her every day and religiously check this thread. I know that in the US though, missing persons can be a different ball game. Over here, there are only so many places to look!

I'm sorry for my jumbled writing. It's been a long and punishing week at work. I really am so humbled and awed by you all. You are amazing, loving, kind people and like others have said upthread I only hope if, God forbid, I went missing, you lot would be right there working your butts off so brilliantly to help find me. And I'd hope I'd turn up at the other end to buy you all a drink (of your choice!!)

Love

Grace

I just love this post, Grace, and I could seriously go OT with this. I'm so glad you're here. :)

Both of my paternal grandparents came here from Ireland, met in Wisconsin and married. My grandfather was from Connemara in County Galway and my grandmother was from County Mayo. I never got to meet them, but I got to visit both of their birthplaces and meet cousins on our one trip to Great Britain in 1978. I loved it!

Yes, everything is so much bigger and so wild here, especially in the west. I can see how that could affect the chances of finding someone, compared to England. The Applegate Valley, where Stephanie's place is really does make you say Wow! But even that relatively small area has so many out of the way places. It's daunting to search.

And last, but not least, I'll order a Guinness, although I hope not to have to take you up on it. :)

(Trying to keep my mind off this disturbing news from KMED.)

BBM....I was in the Connemara too! beautiful and so wild. The whole west of Ireland is considered the "wild west". We stayed for a week in a tiny fishing village on Galway Bay in County Clare. (Sometime when I have more emotional strength for it, I will relate the story of the murder that occurred in this tiny village just before we arrived. Thankfully the murderer was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.)

Not that we want to take Grace up on that drink, but I'll have an Irish Breakfast tea with Baileys.

My heart stopped. We stood in this spot on the bridge in September on our first sleuthing visit. I remember thinking how easy it would have been....:(

Here are a couple of links. The first is a map. You may need to scroll down to find it. Swayne Point and the bridge are on the right. The second link is to a panoramic view of the area. You may have to decline the app download first. It will look dark gray until you move the photo around and you will see the lake and the bridge and the dam.

I'm sick to my stomach right now.

Looks like Applegate Reservoir is a straight shot south of Ruch.

I so want this not to be related to Stephanie, and yet I want her found, no matter what.

Apparently KOBI5 covered the Applegate Lake search at 6:00 pm. I had the news on, but I must have missed it somehow. I will watch at 10:00 pm on the Fox affiliate.

I wonder if this is a new lead or if they can finally search because the water level has dropped.

After all you did today, LaLouve, this is like a punch in the stomach. But yes, we want her found and someone brought to justice.

Applegate Lake is about 14-15 miles from Ruch if I recall, on a two lane country road. Late at night there wouldn't be much traffic and it's possible to drive across the bridge to a more isolated area, although there are campgrounds there.

This link is for Applegate Lake. The bottom photo is looking down on the dam.

Any idea how far the level drops before winter sets in?

BBM...yes that's exactly what it is. I've gotten a lot more invested in finding Stephanie in the last week or so.

When I was introducing myself to folks in Longview today, it was easiest to explain why I was involved by saying I was a friend of a friend of Stephanie's. I guess that's more true than I first realized.

May the angels watch over Stephanie wherever she may be tonight.

Forgot to add, I've thought Applegate Lake on Fourth of July weekend would've been a busy place.

The water level was pretty far down when we were out there Sept. 10. I would say it was at least 6-8 feet down from the trees based on a photo I took. So it would have dropped a lot more by now.

We've pondered that. July 4 was a Thursday, so that might factor in. But if it was very late at night/early morning (which is when her car was used), campers would be asleep. The bridge isn't super close to campgrounds.

Here is a partial quote of the report posted by KMED Radio. Apparently the Applegate lake search was on Wednesday and has not been confirmed by JCSO. A teaser was posted on KOBI5 FB Thursday for the 6:00 pm news, but I don't see any more on their website.

"SOURCES TELL NBC FIVE NEWS.. THEY SPOTTED CREWS SEARCHING THE WATER SAYING SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES ARRIVED AROUND TEN O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING WEDNESDAY. THE SOURCES SAY THEY AT WERE USING LEAST TWO BOATS AND ANOTHER JET BOAT SEARCHING THE AREA BELOW THE BRIDGE AT SWAYNE POINT LOOKOUT AT APPLEGATE RESERVOIR. BUT THE DETAILS REMAIN UNCONFIRMED BY THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE."

Here is the panoramic photo of the bridge over the dam at Applegate Lake. The search was taking place nearby. If this opens and looks gray (bridge concrete), move the photo and you will see the lake.
