Details of Disappearance

Manizak was last seen on July 30, 1999. His last known legal address was on Raven Road in Doyle, California. At the time of his disappearance, he was on disability for his diabetes and was traveling around the country in his van. He had camping equipment and would camp each night off the highway. He often picked up hitchhikers in his travels.

Manizak called his mother at least twice a week to assure her he was safe. The last time anyone heard from him was when he called his mother from a truck stop east of Twin Falls, Idaho. He said he was en route to Newport, Oregon. He has never been heard from again.

He may be driving his brown/copper 1970 Ford van with California license plates numbered 87647D. He hasn't claimed his disability checks or used his medical card to get diabetic supplies since his disappearance. He may be in Idaho, Oregon or Montana.

Prior to his disappearance, Manizak was convicted of oral copulation with a child under fourteen. He is required to register as a sexual offender. His case remains unsolved.

If he lived in Doyle, CA and was headed to Newport, OR then Twin Falls, ID seems like quite a detour! Then again, if he was "traveling around the country," then maybe he was okay taking the scenic route, so to speak.

Honestly, though, I feel like his actions put him at high risk. Camping off of highways and picking up hitchhikers are not safe things to do. These could've put him in the path of the wrong person. His past sexual offense could've also been a factor. If he tried to reoffend, someone could've fought back.

<<Circumstances of Disappearance

Manizak is on disability due to diabetes and loves to travel in his van throughout the United States.

He is very friendly and often picks up hitchhikers.

He would camp out each night, somewhere off a highway, preferring dirt roads among the trees. He had camping equipment with him.

Because of his diabetes, he would renew his insulin supplies at clinics in the towns he traveled through. He did not care properly for his diabetes, and may have slipped into a diabetic coma.

He always called home to his mother at least twice weekly so that she would not worry, and was very close to his mother. He was living with her in California, every few months, when he was not on the road. He was last heard from at a truck stop just east of Twin Falls, Idaho, and was headed for Newport, Oregon.

He was driving a 1970 Ford van, copper brown color, with California License Number 87647D .

He has not claimed his disability checks, or used his medical card for diabetic supplies.

He may be in Idaho, Oregon or Montana.>>

Man found in Los Angeles area alive was missing from 1999. Is the same man?

Woman to reunite with brother missing since 1999 after seeing his photo in USA TODAY report, officials say

A California man who was reported missing 25 years ago is set to be reunited with his sister after a USA TODAY article published in May alerted the woman to her sibling's whereabouts, authorities announced.

The report, which sought to identify an unknown patient at a Los Angeles County hospital, was sent to the woman by a friend of hers, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office in Northern California confirmed on Facebook.

The patient was discovered in South Los Angeles on April 15 and taken to the St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California, USA TODAY previously reported.

Officials at the hospital asked for the public's assistance in identifying the man, who is non-verbal and could not communicate his name.

For the next six months, the hospital's social services department was unable to reach any family members for the patient. That all changed on Friday, when his sister told the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office that she believed the unidentified patient was her long lost brother.

The sheriff's office has not revealed the name of the man or his family members, citing privacy for the family. Information regarding his health status have also been withheld due to patient confidentiality laws. USA TODAY has reached out to the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Francis Medical Center for additional information.

Brother reported missing in 1999

The man was reported missing from Doyle, California in 1999 and not heard from since, his sister told the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s Deputy Derek Kennemore contacted the hospital, where staff told him the patient had been transferred to different hospital. The second hospital confirmed that the man was in their care and matched the description of the missing person, according to the sheriff’s office.

His identity was later confirmed through a fingerprint test conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

The eyebrows look identical

He's the same height too, but the USA article believes he's in his mid-60s and has blue eyes. Thomas is reported to have green eyes and would be 53 today.

Wow this news is "miraculous" indeed! I'm so happy for this family, that they're finally reunited with Tommy after 25 years. I can't imagine what they must be feeling now.

I also wonder what Tommy had been doing for this whole time, how long he's been non-verbal, if that was a contributing factor, etc. But the important thing is that he's found alive!

What I found interesting about this case is that putting his picture in an article that length of time later actually resulted in someone, in this case a family member, seeing it and identifying him from it. So many times pictures (whether post mortem or reconstructions) of Does-the vast majority of whom are dead by that time- are published in articles to no avail. Of course, some reconstructions aren't very accurate, and even post mortem photos aren't as good as that of a living person (depending on how long the person had been dead).

But new details uncovered by USA TODAY reveal that Manizak is a registered sex offender, convicted of abusing a child in 1993, a captain with the Lassen County Sheriff's Department confirmed Wednesday. Manizak spent three years in a county prison for the offense, Capt. Mike Carney said at his office in Susanville, about 112 miles east of Redding.
